I am writing a technology book/manual, and am currently having writers block. Could I please get some suggestions on some good fast acting herbs or legal drugs for enhancing brain activity? (also include recommended doses)
Wellbutrin sharpens my brain. I wouldn't even consider sitting down to balance my checkbook without having taken a 150mg tab an hour or two before hand. And I'll wash it down with a couple cups of good strong Colombian coffee.

I think this could be good for a writer working on a deadline who needs some extra energy. Not sure it would help a creative block, though it might. Betel nut might also be useful for this purpose.

A drug trip, like a vacation, can help by shifting one's perspective and providing a "fresh" look on the topic, though these are more often useful for more creative (fiction) writing projects.
Sticking with the legal and reasonably available substances, two that come to mind are morning glory seeds and dextromethorphan (DXM). For more details, see:

I find alcohol loosens creativity logjams. Dose depends on the individual and tolerance. A few beers work for me, cleaning the contacts and opening the circuits. I think there is evidence that some of the most creative writers and artists were excessively fond of alcohol.

To be used as an anti-depressant, it takes a week or two before the effects are realized. But I noticed a sharpening of attention and a very very mild speedy like effect about 1-2 hours after I take a single 150mg tab. I find it's effect very calming after I've take 3 - 150mg tabs (1 every 8 hours). For me at least, it really takes the edge off when having to attempt a difficult or challenging mental task.
I always keep a few hundred Wellbutrin 150mg tabs on hand. When I'm having one of those shit days, or weeks, it really seems to take the edge off, sharpens my mind, and relaxes me. It's anti-depressant effects seem to kick in after I've taken it every 8 hours for 3 days.
As an ex-smoker, I find it keeps me from going back to smoking during "trying times".
BTW, I heard some mention it also produces an interesting effect when they crushed one and smoked part of it. I don't know if that was true or not, or what the effects were. I'd be interested in hearing what that is all about if anyone has any info.
i never really wrote until i tried dxm. it sort of opens up this word bank in my brain that i normally wouldn't have access to. i also am able to vocalise my feelings to others way more effectively. -clam

Clam, under what specific name do you buy dxm? As a pill, cough syrup? How much do you take for writing?

How about just take a vacation to clear your mind a little, and then get back into it? Trying too hard creates the "block" IMO.. You have to let things flow naturally as opposed to try hard. Anything that relaxes you and puts you in a neutral frame of mind, having a nice glass of wine in a hot-tub and smelling the roses here and there, I think, would put yourself in a more blissful state of mind.. I don't think its important to be in a blissful state of mind *while* you write, but I think its important to have healthy dosages of it here and there, creating a more positive and bright attitude towards life in general. This, and take some ginko and perhaps a good diet of fruits and juices, (as well as everything else in a balanced diet) likely would help a long way to help stimuate the mind for creativity, thought, and routine.
I seem to recall that he did acid at leats once too. But maybe just a wishful pseudo-memory. -- The optimist proclaims we live in the best of all possible worlds. The pessimist fears this may be true.

As a matter of fact, I am ADHD (very much so on the Hyper part). I did the Ritalin and Adderal thing for a few years, but found that regular aerobic level workouts (I prefer inline skating 12-18 miles 4-5 days a week) were a much better solution. I do keep some Wellbutrin on hand when I need maximum concentration, which works much better than Ritalin or Adderal.

Ritalin (methylphenidate) will also reduce ADD symptoms, but don't try to write anything... you'll have more words than sense pouring out of your serotonin-loaded brain...

The best thing for writer's block is to read, preferably something relevant to imitate. Your own voice will come, but everyone imitates first. No drug that I've found has helped me be a better writer. Although certainly some drugs on some occasions have inspired me to write (pot, acid, alcohol), I always revise sober. You write to communicate, so unless your intended audience will be high the same way you are high, it's best to be baseline when trying to imagine how another person will understand what you're trying to say. My advise is to sit down with some tech manuals--to make it less boring use the ones for some appliances you never quite mastered--and read conscious of the word choices, syntax, etc. If you can find a drug that makes you more conscious of how language works while still keeping you enough in the baseline to predict how a general audience will read it, let us know. LSD in particular makes me too aware of how language works, so much so that I can't write for other people (most people don't understand metalanguage very well, not because they can't but because it requires different assumptions from everyday language use).

Whoa, this sounds like a mistake to me. Most of the manuals for appliances in my house were printed in China...in broken English. -- The optimist proclaims we live in the best of all possible worlds. The pessimist fears this may be true.

True true. But bad examples are as important as good ones. Although in his case, as a tech writer I would think he'd have access to a wider range of materials.

Piracetem has been proven to treat expressive language disorders. I have had good luck with a combination of l-dopa and pemoline. Cognitive tehrapy works pretty well for writers block also, "Writers block is is the confusion of the process of creation with the process of sleep." Try music, singing, and reading to break the cognitive blocks.

I use various brands of GSE (Grape Seed Extract). I do this to spread it around, ensure I'm not getting bilked as there's no real guarantee of purity out there yet.
From reading, GSE apparently passes the BBB. In my system, it improves concentration and comprehension. So much so that I've come to rely on it when I need to get some writing done. On an empty stomach it takes about 30 minutes for my usual 100 mg dose to take effect - perhaps double that on a full stomach. (I'll sometimes combine it with Gotu Kola)
Funny thing: I also take GSE before going to bed, ever since I've found it helps me sleep through the night. Whereas I'd often awake very early and stay awake, since taking 100mg GSE about 30 minutes before conking-out every night I tend to sleep through until I've had my 7 or 8 hours, rather than wake-up after 5 hours unrefreshed and unable to get back to sleep.
Caveat: I don't think a helluva lot's known about GSE, and searches yeild way too much commercial 'information' and exaggerated claims about it.
(Pycnogenol, or Pine Bark apparently does the same thing as GSE but it's a lot more expensive)
GSE's prices have come down in the US over the past year or so. Try one of the large supplement sites for comparative price searches. Nex
