Subject: Am I Addicted?
I have been on a very effective and enjoyable diet for celiac disease
for seven years. The diet permits diluted coffee, half coffee half
water. No quantity is specified.

Every morning I have been in the habit of brewing ( in an electric
drip coffeemaker) one  coffe measure of organic mild grounds to 16 oz.
of water. I sip it slowly sometimes over a one hour period of time. It
gives me definite brain stimulation and a pleasant feeling.

That is all the coffee I have for the entire day.
.
Someone on a diet listserv told me I am addicted to caffeine and
should not even have that daily diluted quantity.

This morning I am sipping very weak tea and of course having typical
withdrawal symptoms.  I am cranky, headache, very irritable and
unhappy.

Feedback please.

Does it really matter? So what if they think you are 'addicted' to it?
And what does it really matter if you are?
Minor in the scope of the rest of your food/health picture.
Recent research gives caffeine an ok - even somewhat beneficial stamp
of approval - moderation of course.
And I would say your morning coffee is below even moderate
consumption.
Enjoy it.

You are addicted but the small amount you consume is so small I
normally wouldn't even give it a second thought. I used (and then
later abused) caffeine as the only way to tone down constant
migraines. I am currently off it at the moment.

If you are concerned about your use in your diet for celiac disease
mention how much, how often and the effects of it to your doctor next
time you have an appointment. Keep in mind there are a few side
effects to caffeine other than being awake when you need to sleep and
withdrawal, I had problems with urination, but I was also drinking two
liters of Pepsi Cola a day.

If your doctor says it's ok for the degree of your disease just ask
yourself if you are drinking it because you need it to wake up or to
feel "normal" or if you are drinking it because you like the taste. If
you aren't drinking it because you like the taste than wean yourself
off, otherwise enjoy.
