Hijacked Bus

Friday-Saturday, January 12-13, 2007

Dream began with an image of a bus zooming down a street, racing around
corners. There were flames coming from the bus, but I wasn't sure if it
was on fire or if this was an "artistic license" special effect, just to
show the bus was moving "smokin" fast. The bus was initially on a street
lined with what seemed to be parkland, grass and trees, old-fashioned
lampposts (this was set at night); later, the bus seemed headed into a
downtown area of skyscrapers that I took to be New York City (and later
turned into New Orleans).

People shouted that the bus had been hijacked and a number of people on
bicycles set out in pursuit of the bus; I also followed on a bike,
looking for the bus, out of sight now. I took what I hoped was a
shortut to catch up to the bus, turning onto a dark side street away
from the rest of the bicyclists. A couple of times I caught a glimpse
of the flaming bus zooming by a cross-street ahead, but didn't catch up
to it.

After a while I came upon another man riiiding a bike alone, looking for
the bus. I puled alongside and talked to him -- he was being played by
Rowan Atkinson (played "Mr. Bean" and "Blackadder" on TV). Here, he was
an artist with an indistinct European accent, looking for the bus
because his paintbrushes and other art supplies were on the hijacked
bus. The artist was upset, disconsolate at the loss of his work
supplies, and it gradually became obvious that the bus was gone and we
weren't going to find it, riding alone along the nighttime streets.

The big city downtown streets gave way to what looked like New Orleans'
French Quarter, with brick paving and smaller, old buildings. The
artist needed some piece of information and I told him he needed the
Times of London newspaper - and that he could find that at the public
library nearyby. We rode down another side street to a wide, broad
street with a grand white marble building, a neoclassical building
complete with a dome, that I understood to be the library. It seemed to
be close to dawn.

We entered the library and went to the main desk, a circular stone desk
in the middle of the room. There were crowds waiting to speak to the
librarians or check out books, and we stood and waited. I made my way
around the circle toward a librarian who seemed less busy, but then I
saw the newspapers in a rack built into the desk. I found the Times,
but it was chained to a heavy iron bar to prevent it being stolen, and I
had to read it there. I opened the paper and began looking for the news
the European artist (who was hangng back a bit) needed.

=END OF DREAM=

Notes: No particular thoughts about the dream. The downtown area I took
for New York could've been Houston -- was downtown there last week; was
in New Orleans more than a year ago (just before Katrina). I haven't
seen Rowan Atkinson in anything recently (saw him in "Rat Race" on TV a
few weeks ago -- he did have an Italian accent in that). Did look at
the Times newspaper online last night. Slept poorly, kept waking
through the night, but did sleep long enough to have this one vivid
dream.

Comments and interpretations welcome.

Saturday afternoon, I saw a reference to the word "catamount" and
couldn't remember what it meant, so I looked it up on Wikipedia and saw
that it is another name for a puma or cougar. This brought forth a
memory of another dream I had last night, a very brief one:

Cougar in Town

Friday-Saturday, January 12-13, 2007

I was driving along a major, mostly residential, street in my childhood
hometown. I was driving past an apartment complex and looked toward it
and saw a cougar standing before a gap between some buildings. The cat
was looking into the complex, seemed alert, as if it was listening to
something. I stopped my car, thought I needed call the police and have
them come catch the cat, because if it wandered into the complex it
might attack a child.

I picked up my cell phone and called 911, not knowing any other number
for the local cops; I got an operator who just got part of what I was
saying and didn't think it was urgent, put me on hold. I realized this
was a fantastic sight and I might not be believed, thought I should take
a picture of it with my cell phone camera, but I wasn't sure how to do
that whil I was on hold. I was also unsure whether to get out of my
car, worried I might attract the cougar's attention and be attacked
myself. I made an effort with the phone camera, but wasn't sure if it
took or would be very identifiable, because it was more than a hundred
feet away.

I finally spoke to someone at the police department -- he was skeptical
but said he would send someone over. I saw the cougar heading into the
apartment complex and was worried we'd lose him in there, told the
police dispatcher I would follow, but not too closely, because I didn't
want to provoke the cat. I hung up and got out of my car, very nervous,
and started toward the apartments, fiddling with my phone to be ready to
take another picture if I saw the cat (now out of my sight) again.

=END OF DREAM=

Notes: The site where the apartments were is where in RL a newly
re-built junior high school is located; the apartment complex itself
looked like a complex on the other side of town.

It occured to me while I was writing down the dream that the name of the
junior high school's sports teams is the Panthers. I wasn't consciously
aware of that at the time -- two older sisters attended school there
more than 35 years ago, but we moved out of town before I was of age to
attend; neither sister was involved with sports then.

There have been reports of some large predator, suspected of being a
cougar, taking small livestock animals (goats, etc.) in a rural area
about fifteen miles west of the dream locale, and a hunter neighbor
claims to have seen signs of cougar in a wildlife refuge in the area.
