Hilarious movie. I watched it a long time ago. The best movie, and
Oscar winner, was "Ass". lol

### - you're very welcome + glad you enjoyed it too, but do you get-it that
it's not 'really' about the 'future' and is actually about today?

that although it might indeed exaggerate everything to the extreme (i.e. for
the sake of 'clarity' and understanding in the form of an amusing analogy
etc), but nevertheless it's actually about the state of humanity today, and
consequently, where we're all headed and why :)

Slider, if your take on this movie is the same as mine, and I can't
tell that from what you've written above, then for once, we agree.
I'll tell you what I think the movie is about:

When I was a kid, early teens, late 60s, I read a couple of SF
stories by Cyril Kornbluth (CM Kornbluth) - the first called The
Marching Morons, and a better, more distilled and shorter later story,
The Little Black Bag. Get your hand on them, particularly the latter,
especially the latter, and you will see what I mean.

Basically, in a future when intelligent people have been inundated and
overwhelmed by the stupid procreational facilities of the
unintelligent and the uneducated masses, the relatively few
intelligent run, organise and control the low IQ masses, without the
masses' knowledge. I will let you read the story (again, get the
latter story, in pdf, you should be able to find it in an ebook NG) -
but what sticks in my mind after all these years is Kornbluth's
refrain, "at some approaching point in the future, they would cross
that bridge" meaning, get rid of the stupid, unproductive, uneducated
swill.

Is that your take on the movie?
It certainly is mine.

### - well, i have a different view to yours, one perhaps not quite so
right-wing as to its outlook, solutions nor simplicity, i.e. we're on the same
page, but currently with widely differing views...

that what the film is telling us, is, like many others all telling/relating
the same general story, is that the human race is 'already' walking around
with its head stuck up its proverbial arse, not because humans are inherently
stupid or anything, but because such is the current 'emphasis' and 'premium'
society places upon creating/having and maintaining such a crappy view of life
and that of being alive...

that for all the cleverness and genuine genius of science and the rational
approach in general, mankind is still like spoiled child albeit with a growing
collection of incredibly + increasingly dangerous toys that gives him the
feeling that he actually knows what he's doing, when in fact and reality
nothing could be farther from the truth!

that while he (humanity) wilfully indulges in an entirely
egotistical-cum-egocentric view of himself and the world he's created (or
rather: 'superimposed' upon the 'real' world and then takes for being the only
available reality) he's not then really/perceptually in a position to see that
he's actually 'damaging' said underlying reality + himself in the process...

that what he euphemistically calls 'progress' is in fact humanity going
backwards, although of course it doesn't at all look like that to him... his
entirely subjective view of himself and the world precluding any such thing...

that when it comes to understanding that film it's thus entirely the 'context'
it which it's viewed that counts, a 'context' that's automatically ruled-out
by the very language (of reason) that describes their ostensibly man-made and
thus totally artificial world...

e.g... henry miller wrote a story called 'the air-conditioned nightmare' in
which he envisions a world where everywhere is a controlled ambient 75
degrees, where everyone basically looks the same and thinks the same + does the
same the world over, a world where genuine 'Art' has degenerated into just a
bunch of fancy designs used to pretty up the otherwise bare + plain walls,
humanity reduced to being more robots than individuals, and stuck in a
self-created air-conditioned nightmare of his own making and design and
realises it not (a genuine nightmare scenario iow)

the question being is this true or not + what, if anything, can be done about
it so as to definitely avert/avoid befalling such a calamity!

hitlers' extreme right-wing solution being to just systematically get-rid of
all the people fucking it up and then we'll have a nice world + all we gotta
do now is sit down and make a list of all the people we gotta get rid of??
(like i can see big-big problems in that kinda solution, can't you?) and that
consequently + all-in-all, all such right-wing solutions are basically just
crap that makes everything even worse than it was before as opposed to
actually 'fixing' anything + ditto the extreme left, where again,
dictatorships perforce tend to rule the day (think of stalin for example and
you'll definitely get the whole picture! lol)

that while 'science' purports to be impartial, the truth is it's actually a
totally politically driven and directed movement bought and paid for (and thus
directed) by governments and big business and little else, and hence the
increasingly dreadful state of the world today, and with absolutely no light
at the end of the tunnel that isn't some totally unrealistic + unrealisable
fantasies, like for example, mankind heading for the stars when he's
completely fucked this place up! (i.e. we'll never possibly make it to other
planets in time to save us + even if we did it would only be worse than it is
here! a 'real' air-conditioned nightmare, literally! and not even on this
planet but far from home!)

ditto the idea that some fantastic future technology will arrive in time to
stop us all slowly poisoning ourselves by turning our supporting biosphere
into a deadly chemical soup in which only ants and cockroaches can ultimately
thrive! (i.e. we're still killing it faster than we can ever preserve it iow)
that ultimately, and with hindsight, science thus directed has really only
ever created 10 more 'worse' problems for every so-called 'solution' it's come
up with! further + even worse problems that perforce will have to be solved by
science in the future and so on and so on, when in-reality we're really only
piling more and more even worse problems upon ourselves till it all goes out
of sight way over the horizon! plus meanwhile we all imagine we're
accomplishing great things when nothing could be farther from the truth!
(we're digging a hole for ourselves is what we're all really doing, make no
mistake)

but ha! you try and tell 'em that and by god they'll quickly nail ya's to the
nearest tree and that will be that! (lol they've got some very quaint old
customs and traditions on this planet and that's one of 'em!:)

and well, i just dunno what the fuck we're gonna 'do' with 'em all, is what
worries me heh, i mean, ya can't just line 'em all up and shoot 'em now can
ya! (it's been tried before for example, and it's just horrible!) the truth
being that there's probably not a lot that 'can' be done about it that doesn't
ultimately just make it far worse than it already is, and in which case
'idiocracy' here we come! that or some-such 'other' equally utopian nightmare
that doesn't bare thinking about...

nope... i'm afraid there's not actually much hope for this planet and the
human race such as it is, we're burning our candle at both ends and loving it
+ there's just no way they're ever gonna be changing their minds anytime now
or anytime soon for the foreseeable future, we're already insane! plus we
always kill anyone who tries to make it better! (which is insanity indeed!;)
and consequently, the only 'solutions' that remain (viable solutions that is)
perforce are individual ones as opposed to collectively, that while humanity
en-mass is slowly sinking with its ship (the ship of fools) there is still the
occasional 'individual' that jumps-ship and manages to escape to something
else, something 'older' than the current madness perhaps, something that was
maybe always there but that slipped our attention coz our attention was being
deliberately directed elsewhere...

the 'puppy-dog' ending in the film idiocracy only being there to placate us
lest mankind turns en-mass in terror and shoots himself in the head when he
realises there's just no hope down the road we're all going, and 'have' been
going for the last several hundreds of years! the march of so-called
'progress' has, i'm afraid by now, become altogether unstoppable...

sad but true, it's time to wake up and smell the flowers! (that's while
there's still any flowers left that is ;)

It's A Miracle

Miraculous you call it babe
You ain't seen nothing yet
They've got Pepsi in the Andes
Mcdonalds in Tibet
Yosemite's been turned into
A golf course for the Japs
The Dead Sea is alive with rap
Between the Tigris and Euphrates
There's a leisure centre now
They've got all kinds of sports
They've got Bermuda shorts
The had sex in Pennsylvania
A Brazilian grew a tree
A doctor in Manhattan
Saved a dying man for free
It's a miracle
Another miracle
By the grace of God Almighty
And pressures of marketplace
The human race has civilized itself
It's a miracle
We've got warehouses of butter
We've got oceans of wine
We've got famine when we need it
Got designer crime
We've got Mercedes
We've got Porsche
Ferrari and Rolls Royce
We've got a choice
She said meet me
In the Garden of Gethsemane my dear
The Lord said Peter I can see
Your house from here
An honest man
Finally reaped what he had sown
And farmer in Ohio has just repaid a loan
It's a miracle
Another miracle
By the grace of God Almighty
And pressures of marketplace
The human race has civilized itself
It's a miracle
We cower in our shelters
With our hands over our ears
Lloyd-Webber's awful stuff
Runs for years and years and years
An earthquake hits the theatre
But the operetta lingers
Then the piano lids comes down
And break his fucking fingers
It's a miracle :)
