Hi,

I own a couple of domains and wondered if I could register names before a
dot! Sorry I do not know the technical term!

Imagine I owned www.smith.com. Do I also own www.john.smith.com? If so how
do I go about setting up such a site and do I need to register it?

Any help or pointers to information appreciated.

No. However, if you owned "smith.com", then you would own both.

Learn the difference between a hostname and a domain.

Many thanks for such a quick response to my question. My understanding is
that a hostname is the name of a particular computer on a network and so I'm
therefore struggling to understand how that might impact on my question..

So if I owned www.smith.com and you say I owned www.john.smith.com I assume
I can sell people personal web sites who all have the name "smith"!

As googling "what is hostname" hasn't helped me understand this any further
can you suggest something else I should read please?

john.smith.com is a subdomain. You also call it a 3rd level domain. You can
create it on the nameserver, where you host your domain.

I have a site going on, doing this: http://subdoms.com, where I offer free
subdomains and webspace.
