<I think AOL ate my original post which I made last night.......so im going
to try it again>

Last night I was watching "Late Night with Conan O'Brian <I think I kinda
look like him> and they did a really funny segment about "Going" to Hawaii.

As the segment ended and they went to comercial...the band was playing a
song that I recognized from the Tiki Room. Are these songs original to the
Disney attraction or were they already "Hawaiian Folk Music" before Disney
got to them?

I think the Tiki Room theme is the only original piece of music.

I didn't see the show, but if you're referring to the music that's
played during the storm section of the tiki room, it's called the
"Hawaiian War Chant." Spike Jones did a version once. It's famous.

1) The "Hawaiian War Chant" is actually a Hawaiian love song that was
jazzed up during the "yaka hiki dula" period of Hawaiian/American music.
You also hear this melody in the Lion King when Timon dresses in drag
and dances the hula.

In a way, The Tiki Room is true to the intention of the composer since I
believe their arrangement begins slowly and gently before it proceeds
to the more often heard bongo-beat. Ironically, some of the Hawaiian
lyrics are preserved intact (as well as the singers could manage). So
when you hear those screaming tikis singing in Hawaiian and pounding the
war drums, they are really telling a tale of love, not war.

2) Another interesting piece of original Hawaiian music in the Tiki Room
is "Aloha Oe" or "Farewell to Thee". The tune was actually written
by Hawaii's last reigning monarch: Queen Lili'uokalani.

3) I believe "Tiki Tiki Tiki Tiki Tiki Room" is a totally "Disney"
piece. Not Hawaiian at all.

4) The Offenbach number has disappeared? (I think I heard that here).

5) Anybody???

Songs from the lanai include "now is the hour" and "moon of manakoora"
all classic 1950s slide guitar songs from the islands.

Offenbach has dissapeared, along with a few lines, I'm not sure oif all of
them, but in the opening they used to sing We hope we fill you with
pleasure and glee because if we don't make you feel like that were goin' to
wind up on the ladie's hat. and it was removed, I know this because it's on
a CD we have.

Welcome to our tropical hideaway,
you lucky people, you.
If we weren't in the show starting right away,
we'd be in the audienc, too.

In the Tiki, Tiki, Tiki, Tiki, Tiki Room,
in the Tiki, Tiki, Tiki, Tiki, Tiki Toom
all the birds sings words and the flowers croon
in the Tiki, Tiki, Tiki, Tiki, Tiki Room.

The bird of paradise is an elegant bird,
he likes to be seen, but he loves to be heard.
Most little birdies will fly away,
but the Tiki Room birds are here every day.

Repeat chrous

I can't recall the first three lines of the final verse, but it ends with "so
come on and join us for another chorus," at which time the audience is expected
to sing along. I'm sure Matt Orkin can fill in the missing words when he gets
back, if no-one else can before then. I'll probably remeber them myself, when
I'm not sitting up being insomniac. If so, I'll post them.

The following is a effort by David Tomita <da...@pharm.medsch.ucla.edu>
and Don Bertino <ber...@netcom.com> to document the attractions at
Disneyland - the Original (tm). These descriptions where taken out the
handout available from Disneyland called "Disneyland Park - Description
Book for Guests with Hearing Impairments"

As each attraction is typed in, it will be posted and stored at
http://www.calweb.com/~bertino

Any comments/additions/corrections would be welcomed.

===========================================================================
THE ENCHANTED TIKI ROOM

Walt Disney's Enchanted Tiki Room debuted in 1963 as the first Disney
attraction to feature the *Audio-Animatronics(tm)* system. The
overwhelming popularity of this show confirmed Walt's belief that
*Audio-Animatronics(tm)* would open up a whole new dimension of
entertainment, one that combine the realism and immediacy of the theater
with the versatility and consistency of the motion picture.

Located at the entrance to Adventureland, this South Seas island
celebration features 225 singing birds, crooning flowers, and chanting
tiki gods. Before entering the Tiki Room, guest are given a taste of
the tropical magic that's in store as tiki gods and goddesses in the
Enchanted Garden introduce themselves and tell legends of the South
Seas.

Once inside, you'll find seats facing the center of the room, exotic
flowers hanging in large "bowls" from the ceiling, and wooden tikis
sitting in the rafters. As the lights dim and silence fills the
thatch-covered hut, a tiny spotlight focuses everyone's attention on a
multicolored parrot perched near the center of the room. Motionless up
until this time, the bird appears to be either asleep or -- or all
things -- stuffed.

The host taps the perch, and with a surprising loud sigh -- even for a
parrot -- he nods his head, winks at the audience and introduces himself
as Jose, the master of ceremonies. From this point on, the show
literally comes to life, as Jose welcomes everyone to this tropical
paradise, and wakes up his other friends, Michael, Pierre, and Fritz --
all birds from different countries of the world, each featuring a
distinct accent and personality. They then wake all the other birds in
the room, ready for the opening number, "The Tiki Room."

In the Tiki, Tiki, Tiki, Tiki, Tiki Room
In the Tiki, Tiki, Tiki, Tiki, Tiki Room

All the birds sing words
And the flowers croon

In the Tiki, Tiki, Tiki, Tiki, Tiki Room

Welcome to our tropical hideaway

If we weren't in the show starting right away

All together...

In the Tiki, Tiki, Tiki, Tiki, Tiki Room
In the Tiki, Tiki, Tiki, Tiki, Tiki Room

All the birds sing words
And the flowers croon

In the Tiki, Tiki, Tiki, Tiki, Tiki Room

Next, Jose directs the audience's attention to the center of the room,
where a birdmobile descends from the ceiling, revealing beautiful,
exotic white birds. These "ladies" lead off with the national bird
anthem, joined by the rest of the plumage. Later, Jose invites the
audience to join in for a chorus:

Let's all sing like the birdies sing,
Tweet, tweet tweet, tweet tweet.
Let's all sing like the birdies sing,
Sweet, sweet sweet, sweet sweet.

Let's all warble like nightingales,
Give your throat a treat.

Take you time from the birds,
Now you all know the words,
Tweet, tweet tweet, tweet tweet.

A real treat is next on the menu, as the flowers now come to life,
offering a musical luau: birds whistle, flowers hum, and all the singing
incites wooden statues to come to life. They beat a Hawaiian war chant,
bringing the tikis around the pavilion to life. The singing, chanting,
and drum-beating gets more fierce, culminating in a terrible
thunderstorm outside the pavilion. The singing stops and the rain dies
down, giving everyone time for their last number as the audience
departs.

Anyone know where I can get the lyrics to "Hawaiian War Chant"? I sing
along all the time, but I'm sure the words I make up are no where near
what they are supposed to be...

I was told many years ago that the lyrics aren't "true" Hawaiian, but
don't hold me to that; I really don't know for sure.

I do know 98% of the lyrics and can sing this song (still); they are
forever burned in my mind. But... I don't know how well I can write them.
I could try to "sound it out" for you, but my lyrics will probably not
match any you could find on a music sheet. Here goes:

Tah-hoo-wah-ee-lah-ah-tah-hoo-wah-ee-wah-ee-lah
Ay-hoo-hay-nay-lah-ah-pee-lee-koe-ah-loo-ah-lah
Poo-too-too-ee-loo-wah-hee-tay-toe-ay-lah
Hah-noo-wee-poo-wee-poo-tah-hah-wah-hee

Tah-way (oo-way-ah-way)
Tah-oop-ah-la
Tah-way (oo-way-ah-way)
Tah-oop-ah-la

I'm sure there might be a few beginning consonants here and there that
aren't correct. I know this isn't 100% accurate, but it comes very close.

Hope this helps!

Far from it--I do a great rendition of the war chant myself (as long as no-one
is around to hear), and I don't know an actual word of it.

I don't know either, but somehow I suspect that the people who sang it
don't even know what the words mean either.

I only know some of the lyrics to the Tiki Room at WDW in Florida:

Estefan: "Come on baby, Shake your body, do the conga!"

I had to do this song in a show a couple of years ago. You might be
a.d.d.icted if you learn the Hawaiian War Chant and the first thing in
your head is, "Great! Now I can sing along in the Tiki Room!"
Goes like this:
Ta hua ee la a ta hua ee la ee la
Ay hu hene la a pele kua lua la
Pu tay tuay tu wa ee tay toe ay la
Hanu lipo eetah paha lahee
Aaaaaaaa waaaaaaaaay
Taaaaaaaa hu ha la
Aaaaaaaaa waaaaaaaaay
Taaaaaaaa hu ha la
