Hi there, does anyone know the original location that was considered for DW
in Florida?

I'm not sure of other sites in Florida, but I don know at one time there was
some property around Buckeye Lake in Ohio that was being considered.

I know for a fact that the they were looking to by in a town called Davie
(next to Fort Lauderdale) but when word leaked out they pulled the plug and
went to Orlando. I kow this because I lived in the area when this was
happening.

IN 1958, Walt Disney Productions dba Disneyland, Inc. commissioned a study
for the location of an east-coast Disneyland. It addressed population
centers, travel distances, times, weather, etc. At that time, Florida was
not considered, as it was not "centrally located." Nor was Ohio. New
Jersey was actually in the running, as being the general center of several
population centers, and convenient from Richmond to Boston. However, the
idea was shelved because winter weather would make the park unattractive
during a good portion of the year, something Disneyland in California didn't
have to worry about. The idea was revived in ernest in 1963, and Florida
became the top pick. Real estate acquisition began in 1964, and the rest,
as they say, is history.

I have a copy of that 1958 survey, which included a note that any such
investment would likely recoup the monetary outlay within four years. (at
1958 prices)

They also came to south eastern Louisiana, and were considering a plot
across the lake north of New Orleans. But Louisiana politics soon
squelched the deal and they moved on to Floridia.

I not entirely sure -- even though I was a marketing exective with the
company for a number of years. But in WAKING WALT, my new mystery
thriller, Walt Disney comes back from nearly 40 years in cryonic
suspension and, at one point, he tells a story about riding down the
east coast with a bunch of the guys in company's Gulfstream, and that
the minute he saw all that vacant land southwest of Orlando he knew
that was the place. Walt also gets a look at Epcot(he has to borrow
money to get in) and Celebration, and has a few choice words about
both of them.
