shores of California has some people making a run on iodine tablets.
Pharmacists across California report being flooded with requests.
State and county officials spent much of Tuesday trying to keep people
calm by saying that getting the pills wasn't necessary, but then the
United States surgeon general supported the idea as a worthy "precaution."
U.S. Surgeon General Regina Benjamin is in the Bay Area touring a
peninsula hospital. NBC Bay Area reporter Damian Trujillo asked her about
the run on tablets and Dr. Benjamin said although she wasn't aware of
people stocking up, she did not think that would be an overreaction. She
said it was right to be prepared.

For some reason, potassium iodide tablets are prescription only, while
tincture of iodine, a drop of which has the same protective effects,
is available over the counter in the first aid section of Wal-Mart.
Consuming a drop or two on a cracker followed by swabbing a medium-
size patch of skin for about a month should provide adequate
protection.
Calcium supplements would also be advisable, to prevent the absorption
of Strontium-90, which has a half-life of 30 years compared to that of
8 days for Iodine-131. Cesium-137 is chemically similar to potassium,
but whether potassium supplements would prevent absorption is unknown.
I still think everyone is overreacting. Nuclear radiation is scary,
but consider that about 500 above-ground nuclear tests have been
performed around the world, and life still exists.
I took a school tour of a research reactor when I was a kid and it was
the coolest experience of my life! They showed us the cooling pools,
glowing blue from the Chernenkov radiation, and chambers where
radioactive material was handled via robotic arms behind foot-thick
leaded glass. Then they demonstrated radioactive samples emitting
alpha, beta, and gamma radiation, and what materials blocked them.
Nuclear energy is potentially dangerous, but imagine if cavemen gave
up on fire just because someone got burned. The technology CAN be
safely harnessed, and the accident in Japan will serve as a learning
experience. Hopefully, nuclear energy is just a temporary solution to
our energy problems, eventually replaced with fusion energy. Whether
you like it or not, no other source of energy can provide sufficient
power to the ever-increasing human population.
