In discussing the capability of the new Kindle announced by Amazon this
week, the executive director of the author's guild said, ""They don't
have the right to read a book out loud,...That's an audio right, which
is derivative under copyright law."

Amazon's response was, "An Amazon spokesman noted the text-reading
feature depends on text-to-speech technology, and that listeners won't
confuse it with the audiobook experience."

Text-to-Speech isn't new. Where have they been all these years?

Why, they waited till a big dog with deep pockets walked along.

Interesting device, but I'd want to see one before I plunked down $350
for one.

Neither is video amplification for those with poor eyesight.

I wonder it they will make the same claim for those that employ hearing
aids?

Next they will go after Brail translation devices.

LOL...obviously these idiots have no idea what text-to-speech software
is. Even the *BEST* text-to-speech engines can't come anywhere close
to resembling a real human voice and likely won't for at least
another 10 or 20 years. Then of course the program is "stupid" it
doesn't think/read like a human being does, unless the text has been
specifically formatted for it and certainly they aren't doing that.
That's something that the authors ~could~ have done and then sell a
version of their book that's been specifically formatted for
text-to-speech converters...although given the exhaustive effort it
would take to format a whole book they've have to charge like $20 a
copy, but then of course you could just have an actual human read the
damn thing and it'd be a hell of a lot cheaper (not mention it'd sound
better). The author's guild is a LOOOOOONG damn way off from needing
to concern themselves with text-to-speech engines. Oh, yeah, not to
mention that most of the "good" text-to-speech engines are HELLA
fuckin expensive to *LEASE* (you never actually own it). Likely
though they're just using one of the craptastic open source engines
that sound like fucking ass.

"....we are modifying our systems so that rights holders can decide on a
title by title basis whether they want text-to-speech enabled or
disabled for any particular title. We have already begun to work on the
technical changes required to give authors and publishers that choice.
With this new level of control, publishers and authors will be able to
decide for themselves whether it is in their commercial interests to
leave text-to-speech enabled. We believe many will decide that it is."

The technology is not new and has been used to read books, articles, web
pages, etc. for years. It is readily available. It is legal, at least
from Amazon's perspective. But the consumer doesn't get the choice to
use it.

We live in interesting times.

Hmmm...like so much that you write, that's just empty rhetoric. But it
is "Truthy."

History just doesn't support it, and the concept continues unsupported
today. You can tell the many, many intellectuals throughout history that
they were truly free, even though imprisoned, harassed, tortured, etc.
by those that had a political, monetary, or power advantage over them,
even though they had the intellectual advantage. I'm sure it will come
as a comfort.

Hey, what's real substance mean to your posts, anyway. Not much. Never
has, never will.

Well, if they were being tortured, beaten, etc...well I guess they

There is a difference...a *HUGE* difference, between *HAVING*
knowledge and *USING* knowledge. There are no shortage of assholes
running around claiming to be MENSA, but for every one of them that
claims to have some outrageously high IQ they manage to produce all of
*NOTHING* for it. Further, most of the knowledge that it seems you're
thinking of is specific knowledge. You could be a fuckin rocket
scientist, but if you don't even know how to change a flat tire on a
car...pffft...yeah, yer not knowledgeable. Knowledge covers *ALL*
areas of expertise and those such as yourself who limit themselves to
*SINGLE* areas of expertise simply cannot grasp how knowledge can be
power, how it can set you free.

Let me put it this way...right now...every day...all the time...I'm
"breaking" about 52 different laws of the land...*MY* "freedom"
extends *SO* far that most of the current "laws" restricting said
freedom...they don't even apply to those like myself, those who know
how to use technology to get what we want...undetectable and
untraceable. And for the most part the "system" ignores those like
myself, mostly in that we're smart enough not to give them a reason to
go after us, breaking and exploiting the system gently, rather than
abruptly...however, if they ever did...well, those who have the
technology are those that rule. And currently...only the United
States Military could out class the level of technology I currently
have at my disposal. Unfortunately fun little play things like police
cars and police helicopters are not shielded against EMP. Tell me,
have *YOU* ever made an explosively pumped flux compression generator?
^__^ Such fun little toys, amongst *MANY* others are always at the
convenience of those such as myself. Heck I've even made things that
could completely destroy the entire physical architecture of a large
scale network in less than five minutes. If those like myself ever
really wanted to...we could likely completely cripple the entire
countries infrastructure in less than three months. Those like
yourself...those who don't have knowledge...you really don't have any
idea just how...fragile...you really are. `, )

Jed: Boy, I'm warnin' you....

Jethrodeus: Gollee Uncle Jed, how can I be a mad scientist and all, when

This guy is way to precious. You couldn't make up a character like this
if you tried.

He's hovering now, and spinning like a top, reading and responding to
every post. 'Cuz you know who the real Hatter Addict is. No one is more
obsessed with Matt than Matt. He can't not respond when his name is
mentioned.

But be careful. He's got weapons of mass destruction and he might just
use them and show you how fragile you really are.
