I'm no tech head, but I see a slide in IE and a Mac gain. More
importantly what do you see that I should conclude.
Educate me.
Drew
Off to see what I can see at my own stats.
We're definitely seeing an increase in the Mac platform, yes. Up about
3-4% from last year. Windows still dominates and XP still dominates
that. Vista may have pretty much peaked, but I'll have to keep an eye on
that. I liked the iPhone number. we need to be thinking more in terms of
mobile strategies. Linux is dead as a user platform. The freakin' iPhone
beats it in terms of being a more common platform on our site.
More important for designers and coders....almost 14% of our market is
still using IE 6, which has real implications for CSS use and checking
all CSS across browsers, especially in terms of margin and padding
values and how they render in different browsers. IE 6 is pretty much
out there on its own in terms of the "box model" it uses to render those
values and it can really screw up your page. We still have to take IE 6
into account with that % of the market.
We have to cross compare IE 7 and Firefox a well and make sure things
render correctly in both. Safari, too must be considered, but I have to
say, I'm not fond of that browser and how it renders, especially type.
We'll have to see if Chrome comes up in value or is google wasting its
time. It uses a webkit rendering engine, I believe, same as Safari.
Screen resolution? 800x600 is dead! 3% of the market and shrinking. The
smallest screen we really have to design for now is 1024x768. that means
the 960 pixel grid is a good starting point now.
And for those who say, don't use JavaScript because as many as 1 in 10
to 1 in 20 have it turned off for security reasons, I say thbbtttttt! 1
in 300 is closer to reality.
Just my quick observations.
Fred Doyle
BTW, one really important fact in terms of analytics and these numbers,
and for those of you who do much tracking of site visitors:
Number of people not accepting cookies - 10.5%
i.e. over 10% of people do not want to be tracked on the web and be part
of this vast data warehouse, and are willing to take action to ensure
they are not.
Fred Doyle
Great information. Off to check mine:
In the past month with 390 unique visitors not counting bots &
spiders:
IE 7 - 28%
IE 6 - 27%
Firefox - 23%
Safari - 5%
IE 5 - 1%
XP - 71%
Mac - 10%
One statistic I found that you might help define: Of the 877 visitors
including bots & spiders the time spent at the site was "17". Is that
minutes? If so that's pretty good in my opinion.
Thanks for the education.
Drew
I don't know if "17" means minutes in your package or what. It sounds
high, but your visitors are probably pretty focused and there for the
specific reason of evaluating your work and whether or not you are a
good fit for their project.
In our web stats package, at least, time on site is a particularly
unreliable number. If people don't "click away" from you site, then they
will continue to be "on site" whether they are doing anything or not
until the stats package times them out at 30 minutes of no activity.
In our case, where people often open up a page, look at it and then go
do something else without closing the browser window, we tend to get
very high "on site" numbers that are not realistic.
So, to think about that number, you have to know how it is collected.
Fred Doyle

I dunno ... last time *I* was there, I spent a good ten minutes at least.
Only left because I had to pick up one of the rugrats at school.
There's a lot of great stuff there to look at. :)
"17" could *easily* be minutes.
That's not entirely accurate actually, it's a direct result of
FireFox's built in security/popup blocker hooha, NoScript I believe
it's called. Basically when you first go to a site it won't do
anything, it'll be completely locked down. At that point if you
actually want to see the site you have to right click on the little
icon at the bottom and specifically give the site permission. So
although 10.5% may ~initially~ not accept cookies, they will once they
let down the security and allow your site.

Yo Connie. How's it going. Great to see you stick your head back in
here. You still out of the GD business or you all about quilting now.
Hope family is fine and your holidays went great.
Hang around.

NoScript is a Firefox extension. I pretty sure its not part of the
Firefox default installation and must be downloaded and installed as
such. https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/722.
The default installation of Firefox has a security setting allowing the
acceptance of cookies, including 3rd party cookies. Tools > Options >
Privacy > Accept cookies from sites (checked), Accept Third Party
cookies (checked). (We only drop 1st party cookies btw)
It also has a default set up allowing JavaScript to run - Tools >
Options > Content > Enable JavaScript (checked) although there are some
default limitations as to what JavaScript can do (no raising or lowering
windows, no hiding of the status bar, no changing of the status bar
text). But dropping a cookie is ok by default in Firefox 3 at least, and
I'm pretty sure all iterations since 1.5 at least.
Therefore, if NoScript is what you are thinking of, it would be there as
the result of someone taking an action to ensure that they aren't part
of the massive data collection that goes on on the web.
Fred Doyle
No I'm pretty sure it's apart of the default installation...well as
default as asking you during the installation if you want it. There's
a few other basic super popular ones it offers you too as a default,
their "recommended" extensions, you don't have to choose to install
any of them, but a lot of people do, especially NoScript and that one
that lets you download videos off YouTube and other such sites.
Hang around.

Things are pretty good. Haven't done any private sector GD here lately --
illustrations for the gov, but that's about it.
Oh, and we're closing on a new home on Monday! :)
How's bout you?! :)
Hugs!

Damn! Isn't that about the third house you've had since I've know you?
Antsy feet?
All's well here. Staying quite busy and am booked through Feb. with
wheel catalogs. After that I've got a new product development lined
up. Ah. A blank canvas. Now on a 24" iMac and am playing with CS4 when
I get bored with wheels, and that's easy to do.
Bracing for that big cold front coming in. Probably won't affect you
Florons any. Just put the eldest in braces. Damn that's expensive.
Paid for it up front and saved 7%. Not bad in this economy. Wife's biz
is in the tubes. Not many people buying home furnishings. Go figure.
We just need to keep it afloat till we get that turnaround that's been
promised. And don't mention the Panthers. Thankyouverymuch.
Drew

> Bracing for that big cold front coming in.
Geez. What's it going to get down to 40 degree or something like that?
We are expecting -10 tonight, high of 6 degrees tomorrow.
Hi Connie, good to see you here. Sometime I should send you pics of my
wife's quilts. She just amazes me. This year, she quilted our Xmas
cards. Literally. They were small quilted wall hangings, about 4"x6".
Done individually for each person on our list. She has been very
interested in using type on her quilts as part of the design.
Fred Doyle
And you choose to live there? Now I know why all them damn yankees
come down here. Gee.
Drew
Drew
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Damnit, OE's just not cooperating -- and I'm too damned lazy (and tired) to
muss with it. So, as you can tell, this is the only way I can separate out
my reply from yours! >:(
Well, sorta the third house. The first two were apartments, so they don't
*really* count! No, seriously, it was only in the last year that we decided
to actually buy here -- we were actually waiting (and I was *really* hoping)
to move either further south or back north (where my parents are). So this
is our first foray into the world of home-ownership.
That's a good thing, though. The house we're buying was roughly $400K about
2-3 years ago and we're getting it for a paltry $230K. It's an older house
('88) -- and has not only a pool, but a real live poolhouse
(canyabelieveit?!), but it's in one of *those* neighborhoods. The kind where
everyone's snooty and making 6 figures "qualifies" you for welfare. AKA, our
neighbors will probably be jerks and we won't fit in, but at least we'll
have built in equity by the load once the home prices 'round here stabilize.
We're buying in a neighborhood that's *really* close to the beach and a boat
ramp -- so DH is happy. We'll be buying a boat one of these days, I guess.
:/
Oh, *snort* here it's actually 40 right now. Really, really sucks. I moved
down here with the promise that it would *NEVER* get below 60. Having it be
cold enough to snow, but not, is just friggin insulting. If I'm going to
freeze my netherparts off, the least the weather could do is give me snow to
play in!!
I'm glad you're keeping busy. My dad always said "Better to be too busy than
not busy enough!" And you can't see me, but I'm pea-green with jealousy over
your iMac. I want one SO bad -- but I've promised to be miserly until after
we've closed and moved. DH has oodles of remodels planned -- plus he'll
finally have a humongous garage to do some woodworking in, so chances are,
we'll pay WAY more in that type o'stuff than we will for the house!!
Are you loving CS4? My poor Mac isn't powerful enough to use it. So I gotta
live through you!!! Soo? Details? You can also be more generous with the
catalog details, too. 'Til we move and I get unpacked (I'm planning on
taking no more than a *year* to do that! LOL!), I'm outta work, except for
the odd illustration job (but even then, it's technical illustration, so not
much joy).
Um, you've probably already thought of this, but rich people are still rich,
yannow. Has the wife thought of creating *art* instead of furniture? I mean,
instead of advertising her creations as furniture, what about approaching
local galleries and seeing if they'd show them for her?
Or conversely, what about having her write a piece on what she does --
perhaps provide a "free project idea?" I started doing that early in '08
with my quilty stuff (a'fore the stroke done did my poor butt in) and within
a month, I had 300 people signed up and at least 50 shops wanting to
advertise with me (I was doing an eZine -- once the dust settles, I'll try
and do it again).
I'm asking 'cause with all the people swooping down on the ruins of the
housing market, decorating mag sales have gone through the roof. Lord knows
that I've spent over $100 in decorating magazines in the past two months.
Why in the HELL shouldn't your sweet wifey try to market to that market,
too? I'd sure as hell pay for a mag that had her in it! :)
Holler back at me when you can --
*ahem*
Fred, you get up off your lazy rotten butt and be a bit more forthcoming
with how YOU'VE been doing, thankyouverymuch. :)
I'll be in off and on ... more on in the next few days, more off next week
(closing and moving -- YAY!). But I'm always here in spirit (cue corny
muzak). ;)
And oh, yeah, where the HELL is Inez???
> Now I know why all them damn yankees
> come down here. Gee.
Damn right. Share that heat. Is anyone living in North Carolina a native
anymore (well, besides you)?
Fred Doyle
Eh, nothing surprising. I'm very busy at work. We're redesigning our
site which means a lot of opinions and input to deal with. Deploying an
enterprise content management system (RedDot) in conjunction with the
redesign. I had one of the contractors back out on this project and had
to switch to another.
Family life is great and sustaining at the same time, so that makes life
go on. My oldest just got back from 4 months in Ireland. Both kids go
back to school this weekend, so Lee and I get the house back to
ourselves. Yay.

Last time I talked with her she was spending a good deal of time on
Second Life and really enjoying it. she was making some money on there
as well, I believe. Let us know if you hear from her.
Fred Doyle
There's plenty of us. We might be hicks, but we ain't stupid hicks.
Now Charlotte's another story. Native's are as scarce as hens teeth.
Halfbacks everywhere, especially back home in the mountains.
Drew
Actually, I got an RSS alert on this about a half an hour ago. Sounds
like everything is ok thanks to the pilot. I'll bet the weather is
making it miserable for those people though, and frostbite is probably
an issue, especially if people got wet.
At that point in the Hudson River, you might be able to just walk to
shore it is so polluted. ;)
Fred Doyle
It was -23 at 7:00 am just north of me in Glens Falls. Now THAT will
freeze your nose hair.
Fred doyle
I repeat, "and you choose to live there?"
It's 18º here and we're in trauma, yet better than knee deep in the
Hudson. That story took up 5 pages in the paper, seems that flight had
23 BofA employees on it who were trying to get that money from the
fed. Speak of being knee deep...
Drew
D
Damn right, but then, there are a lot of things I do that are questionable.
>

Geez, that's short sleeves weather.

Given the state of the Hudson River at that point, and knowing what was
probably floating by them, there's quite a powerful visual metaphor in
that, isn't there. I know its not really funny given the context, but
does "Up shit creek without a paddle" come to anyone else's mind?
