Honestly? You'll be happy you did (I, too, was a Freehand kinda-gal).
Illy gives you oodles more control and more opps for creativity. It
took me about ... a week (?) to get used to the differences. And to
realize just how much more I could do with Illy that I couldn't with
FH.

Of course, when I was Freehand, FH's interface was ... very technical
to say the least - and creative license could only be had if all the
planets were aligned. I have no idea how much it's changed over the
years. :/

Anywho, you ever need any help, you know where to come!! :)

Also, remember that Alt.Graphics.Illustrator is just a hop, skip and a
jump away! Sure'd be neat to see you there! ;)

You asked for it:
Is there a key command for "duplicate"? All I can find is Option>Click>Drag.
Do I really need all that information concerning path, intersect,
anchor? Can you turn that stuff off?
Since we last visited this issue some years ago you and I had trouble
figuring out Paste Inside. How do I do that again?
At least they now have the ability to have multiple pages. Sorry, I
meant multiple "artboards.

Thanks. I'll check out the Illy newsgroup.

So how did your livermush experience work out for you? My money says the

If you have Photoshop, I'm not sure why you'd invest in it, other than
it comes in the Web version of CS4 along with Photoshop. It does do some
code writing for special effects for you (roll-overs, etc.) that
integrate into Dreamweaver easily and quickly. It plays very nice with
DW if that's what you use for page make-up (I seldom do, try HTML kit,
its free and I like it better). FireWorks used to be much better at GIF
animations, but does anyone use them for much anymore?

Ummmm.....welllllll, I tried it. Fried it up nice and crispy on each
side like you said. Made ot for breakfast with a couple of eggs.
Ummmmm.....wellllll. There was a kitty who loved it.

The Chow Chow and the Pepper Jelly on the other hand are fabulous. The
Chow Chow seems to be made for kielbasa and some good Jewish rye bread,
a great combination. Southern...Polish...Jewish. Who knew.

All I asked was for you to try it. Thanks for giving it a whirl. That
cats going to love me. Last year you feed it grits now livermush. Pretty
soon that "Meow" you hear will have a Southern drawl. Don't worry
though, next time I loose I will not be sending you chitterlings. I'll
go back to the BBQ.

Not that I remember. I do the "opt-click-drag" all the time though,
simply because once I found it, I thought it was so cool that I
"trained" myself to use it. You get used to it after a while. :/

> Do I really need all that information concerning path, intersect,
> anchor? Can you turn that stuff off?

You mean the info/status bar at the bottom? Yup, you can. Sorta. Right
next to the bar should be a drop down menu you can access. Just pull
that down and change it how you like. Depending on the version of Illy
you're using (and the platform), you might even find an easter egg --
a few years back, it was a countdown to Christmas or the running tally
for the National Debt (who says Adobe doesn't have a sense of humor).
On Macs, you could even have googly-eyes on the status bar that would
follow your input device. Very cute.

Usually, I just have mine set to whatever tool I'm using. I don't
really need it, but enh ...

It could be, though, that we're not talking about the same thing. I'm
using CS2 on my lappie. While my lappie's compatible with CS4, I just
haven't gotten around to it.

> Since we last visited this issue some years ago you and I had trouble
> figuring out Paste Inside. How do I do that again?

There is no "paste inside" in Illy (that's Photoshop). What you *can*
do is paste the element EXACTLY where it was on the page, irregardless
of layers or artboards. That would be Control-F for pasting into the
foreground/"uppermost front" or Control-B for pasting into the
background/furthest back.

Control-V just does a regular paste wherever you last *clicked off* on
the artboard. Like, say you select a box to copy and paste. Then, you
click off with your mouse (to deselect the object) an inch to the left
of the object. *That's* where the new pasted object will appear. At
least, that's how it works with me. :/

Now, you **could** actually mean making a clipping mask. That's
when ... say, you have a HUGE illustration and you only want to show a
tiny piece of it, but you don't feel like deleting the rest, okay?
With clipping mask, you can "paste inside" another element (like a
box, circle, etc -- you can draw it, too) and only what's "inside the
box" will show. The rest will still be there, but it won't show. Does
that make sense??

To do that, you'd need the object that you want to play hide 'n' seek
with, and then draw *on top* of that element, a container for the
element (doesn't make sense, but the container ALWAYS has to be on
top). Then, you select both elements and go to Object>Clipping
Mask>Make.

(If the element that you want to play hide 'n' seek with is REALLY
complicated, it's best to try to simplify things by using pathfinder
where possible -- at the very least, group them ALL together)

I don't know if I helped or hindered. Especially at such a late date
(been remodeling like lunatics over here!!). Plus, health problemos
kinda figure in, too. But if you ever need any help at a quicker pace,
just email me. Or call me. :)

Big squishy sewy-crafty-drawy hugs! ;)

I was able to turn it off in Preferences. Damn, bothersome shit. Every
time my mouse went over a path, anchor, anything and the damn thing
would tell me what and where it was. Pffft.

That's what I was looking for. As usual I'll be saving another of your
helpful posts for later review.

To be honest, I set up Illy sooooo long ago, that half the set-up
stuff, I don't remember one bit. I don't usually bother to look up set-
up kind of stuff and just muddle through - tweaking this, turning this
pref off, etc - until I get it *just* the way I like it.

But then, I pretty much do everything compie-wise like that. Unlike my
sewing machines. ;)

Uh-oh ... in our house, any time that someone tells me I've been
"helpful" I know they want something.

So, what do you need washed, ironed or embellished?! ;)

Thanks, Drew. Spent so much time tweaking everything (and trying to
learn *how* to tweak that stuff) that I ran out of time for actual
posting! My studio is still a shambles and I *still* have over 20
large boxes of sewy-crafty-arty stuff to put away.

Was neat though ... found my old linoleum blocks, darkroom supplies,
etc. DS (Luke) is jonesing to learn photography (he covets my old, old
Haminex since he doesn't know any better), so that's a good thing.
We're talking about getting him an secondhand Nikon 8800 - supposedly
that'd be a nice digital SLR for a kid his age.

Yup ... hardly ever has any time to craft or sew (or draw) with me
anymore. Luckily for me, like I said above, Luke seems to filling that
gap. Might be out of sympathy for poor ol' mom ... but I ain't one to
turn *that* down if it means more time with my kiddos!! :)

I looked around the NG and didn't see many posts from you ... hoping
that means your you-know-whats-to-the-wall busy and just don't have
time. :)

And that wouldn't surprise me one bit. :)

A bit of a necropost here, but I surely hope to someone's God that
Drew is actually referring to Adobe FreeHand, the SOFTWARE, and isn't
actually suggesting that he did all his illustration work, up until
this point, actually BY HAND...because that really, really, *REALLY*
would be tremendously sad on a whole variety of levels.
