A business associate mentioned he'd worked for a full one-quarter of
all the "large" advertising agencies in NYC. I didn't ask how many
actual firms that meant cause he seemed like a boor, but I got to
wondering, how many "large" advertising agencies are there in NY?
Roughly?

And how would you define a "large" advertising agency?

To quote Nancy Hamilton, "How High the Moon?"

Exactly!

Somewhere there's music
How faint the tune
Somewhere there's heaven
How high the moon
There is no moon above
When love is far away too
Till it comes true
That you love me as I love you

I'd define a "large New York agency" as one with multiple offices
outside of the city. If this associate brags about working for 1/4 of
those he seems to me to either have trouble holding down a job or he's
a freelancer. Here in Charlotte they are defined by their client base
and staff size. I would consider there to be 3 of which I've worked
for all. That don't make me shit.
