Has anyone seen the movie Waking Life? OMG, it was so beautiful. How
did they do that? I've never seen anything like it before. Does anyone
know what kind of software they used for those effects? Cheap
software.. cheap enough so my Dad will buy it for my up and coming
birthday! ;)

I'm pretty sure it was a custom made animation program. However most of it
was shot live and converted to a vector based animation. Nothing you can
just go out and buy. And anything you do go out and buy wont give you the
skills it takes to use it. Most 3D animation programs take a long time to
learn. Some takes years to perfect.

Umm, is your dad a cool guy that has a few million to spare,?

Um Tippy you sound kinna nice,

But I have to tell you its not the software, its the MANUALS that are
the problem.
And not to reduce your dreams..............just maybe.....a bank of
computers....Um just one is a bit slowwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww

But yer, the animation stuff is looking cool.
Software is free...go to MAYA (alias wavefront ) and down load the
free version, Softimage also has a free version they will post you 2
cds for free, .for you to practice on..
So keep up your enthusiasm and get playing,
Oh the above may not be the right software, but will give you the
idea. of how it works.
Its the next stage, that ummmmmmmm get a bit expensive.

Check out Pov-Ray (www.povray.org). It completely free, but
the learning curve is a little steep (most computer graphic
program are like that). Try it for a while, and once you've
got a good skill set, switch to one of the bigger programs
(Lightwave, 3D Studio, Maya, etc...)

You also might want to look around for a program called
Rhino. I've heard it's good, but I've never tried it myself.

waking life was shot entirely in b/w film then 30 artists hand painted each
frame. the film was then removed leaving the painted frames. so all you
really need is a film camera, paint and brushes. good luck!

Damn those tiny brushes, so bad on your eyes, and you get cramp.
yer, yer I know, it was scanned in right and then painted.
But you defintly said HAND painted, so we are into painting with dyes
or painting overlays.
But still interesting though.

The animation software that was used was created by the director of the film
It was called Rotoshop, it performs a function called Rotoscoping.
Not every frame was hand painted,
And Maya and SoftImage had nothing to do with it.
I Don't think you can get Rotoshop But you can do a search for Rotoscope +
software
there are some other DV packages you can achieve similar effects with.
But remember you still have to start with live action footage.

My news server is still catching up I'm afraid, so I'm not sure if anyone
has posted this already....

For those of you who may be interested try: http://www.wakinglifemovie.com/

I haven't had a good chance to check all of this site out as yet, but I am
led to believe it has some info about "Rotoscoping" [the process used to
create "Waking Life"] and some other assorted info ...

Until next time...

This is wrong
The frames were "painted" with rotoscope software
called Rotoshop
The software interpoates the backgrounds and movements
of the actors so not every frame is painted

but you were close not

Urm... visiting the site now [curiousity, cats etc.] and must warn you that
there seem to be a *heck* of a lot of pop-ups, and the site seems to be done
exclusively in flash. The artwork itself seems quite good though - I am
about to view a short clip re:"Rotoscoping" ... should be interesting...

I have the program and it's great! It's especially good for modeling but it
does take a while - the more detail - the more time it takes!
