Thanks, Dan and Laura -- it *is* a change from the white and orange......but
if you've noticed -- I always start out with something "aaaahhhhhhhhh" and
then I end up going for a softer look. So never fear.....it will change. I
was inspired by Marimekko fabrics. ;-)

I love those prints! I have an old comforter and sheets with the big splashy
yellow, red and blue flowers that I got years ago and refuse to part with. In
my house in Maryland, I used them in a guest bedroom and painted it to match:
bright yellow ceiling, white walls and red molding around the ceiling.

Carol,
Hey! Do you like it?? Then why should you change it? At last, someone else who
is not afraid of color! :)

It's straightforward, bright, and colorful; a true reflection of it's owner.

You could try rethinking the kerning between the c. and the s. and maybe change
the text to white on mouseover in the orange boxes.

Nice. I liked the old one, too, though.
Couple of technical comments.
W98, AOL6, IE5.5
When I click on the big logo and it goes into the down stage, it replaces the
logo with the bottom third of it, repeated three times, stacked on top of each
other.
On the page with all the logos, I'm getting a lot of white space between rows
at the top with the bottom part much tighter.
There is a rule that goes between the text on the right and the logos. The rule
ends halfway down, where the spacing on the logos tightens up.
Like the Sysphus logo. Don't remember seeing that before.

Oh, no, don't get me wrong, John. :) I *love* black and white and gray
together. My own site was dark and subdued for awhile. Seemed like eveything I

I really love color, too. What's the fun of being an artist if you can't splash

WOW! Hot stuff. Nice, nice lines.
I like the expression on his face in the "Punisher" pinup and "Deadman" is just
fantastic! Fantastic!
The "Spirit" under Commissions is superb. What a great feel to that!

What detail and dimension in the Captain America cover recreation! How long did
that one take?

Love the travel postcards. Beautiful colors.

Sketchbook was great! Hey, no sketches after number 9? What happened? Are you
supposed to be able to click the little number below to view that page? No

When I look at the logo samples page ... if I have the text
enlarged then the spacing goes weird on the logo samples, but if
I then go back to normal text size in the browser then the logo
thumbnails go back into place.

As far as the front graphic and AOL (Netscape 6) is just a piece
of crap and I don't worry about it.

My IE 5.1 on the Mac seems to be seeing the front graphic just
fine though.

Shrug... Too much hassle to worry about all that stuff anyway.

Thanks for the "heads up" though. I just tend to not worry about
the small stuff on the site though.

Not in the art, but in the books...people will love the movie, that will

Let's just say GREEED, by the publisher's, the freelancer's and the people
that came into the *speculation* of making quick turn around on books.
These were non-reader types, but peepz that thot they could buy 20-50 copies
of books and then sell them at a higher price within a month or two...it
doesn't work like that. It was a false market.

Comic Books will always be around in some form or another...so don't worry
about that!

Gem-

Yeah, greed in what the artist wanted to be paid, and in what the companies
started printing...and they had to hire more people to fill the books, and
then when sales dropped it effected everyone...they will always be around in
one way or another...it's just ashame that a few years killed it for most!

Getting comics into a new market is a hard to do...they have to buy vendor
space like everyone else, and the profit margin is slim to none.

The movies do sometimes push books. When the first Batman came out it was a
real boost to EVERYTHING Batman...not just the comics!

|

Hmmm... well, the biggest single impact to the comic book industry in the
last decade was a severe increase in the cost of paper! It drove the price
of most books up a buck or more, overnight. Suddenly, people had to be a lot
pickier, and Marvel got it in their assinine heads to flood the market with
every little spin off imaginable! In the early 90's, it was predicted that
by the year 2000, Marvel would have more than 5 TIMES as many books out as
every other publisher combined!

Obviously, you see where that lead to (Chapter 11, and oddly, a 311million
dollar restructuring plan. Gee, I wish I was bankrupt with that kind of
money...)

| Freelancers. Greed in respect to what they charged for their art?
|

Skipping ahead to Beatty's post, I have to disagree with him. It was the
companies that wanted the name and paid thru the nose for them (comic book
artists I mean). Most of the freelancers didn't have to ask for exorbitant
fees, the fees were handed to them on silver platters!

| Where do you see this going in the next few years? Do you see any drastics
| changes in how comics are marketed or drawn?

Drawn? Oh yeah! The flood of manga/anime style books you see now, even
though it's tapering off a bit, I feel is only the tip of the iceberg. Over
the next couple of years, japanese manga and anime will takeover the
mainstream (there are already signs of it), and the best selling comics are
going to be the ones that emulate it. Joe Madueira<sp> was ahead of his time
:]

As for marketing, we're starting to see it now: Online comics, and
subscriptions to 'premium' comics. Like flash animated comics of your
favorite characters.

| I was thinking that comic book hero movies would boost book sales and vice
| versa.

Only good ones. :] Xmen, Batman, possibly Spiderman (distantly, the Hulk)
boost titles. Punisher, Blade (despite it's box office success, people don't
realize this is a comic!), Batman and Robin, they hurt sales.

the popularity of the books will bring people to theatres, but if the movie
sucks, it's not going to boost the book sales.

That's some interesting info, Fungus, thank you. I was surprised to learn of
Marvel's chosen strategy and subsequent downfall.

>It was the

So did they think well-known names would sell more books? Or was there some
other kind of status to having a particular artist?

The manga anime style is very popular with the comic artists at school and I
have noticed the direction marketing has taken with the online comics. These
can't be 'collected' though, can they? Isn't that a passion for a lot of comic
fans?

Gem-

Yeah I read it, and to a point he is right. The publisher's did throw a lot
of really BIG money at talent, but this was after another company had made
an offer to 2 artists of $40K per issue. They took that offer to Marvel to
see if they would match it. And, Marvel did. Then it opened the doors for
other nonsense like that. Everyone made $$$ for awhile, but you know the
end of the story now.

When I'm talking greed, I'm saying that both the publisher's and the
artist's knew the market was false, and took advantage of it. I'm sure the
ones that got paid the big dollars are well off...most of them, some I hear
went thru it like water.

People bought comic books on spec that they could sell them in a few months
at inflated prices. It worked for awhile...but now the game is over and the
business is damaged good because of it.

Everyone involved is really to blame.

I never got those high pay days...they had their special "pet" friends or
contacts and gave them all the bones! I did well...but not like that!

I personally buy comics [and very few anymore] for the art. I can't read a
great story if the art is bad [that's why I don't buy many...]. There are
some interesting things coming out again, finally, but nothing on a regular
basis. In fact I only get 1 book a month on a "must buy" list, and that's
"100 Bullets" Good story, Great art!

Movies can push a book, but it's rare. The X-Men movie did well but I don't
think it brought many [if any] NEW reader's to the books.

I still love the medium of comics...I just wish the market had stayed
realistic instead of killing itself from the inside out!

...as for Fungus' being a comic artist, I'd like to know who he is? Maybe I
know him? I've been in the game for 20 years...

Actually, there's not really. The problem is, you could have 20 guys (or
ladies. let's not discriminate here :] who can do a truly fantastic job on
your book. But one of those artists you may have heard his/her name
somewhere before. Guess who's getting the gig?

| What do you think sells a comic? The story or the art?

the art, definetly. I hate to say that though. It's the same reason that
special FX movies tend to make so much. Screw the story, we've got tons of
eye candy.

HOWEVER, most well written comics that manage to stick around a few issues
(or more) tend to develop fiercely loyal fan bases. Granted, they may not be
as big as Xmen or Batman or whatever, but you can switch out artists on
those books and the readership will still keep coming (providing the writing
remains up to snuff). But on the mainstreamers, if you go to a crappy
artist, and keep him/her too long, you'll lose readers. (some will stick
around a bit, hoping the art gets better again, but after awhile, they sort
of stray away from the book).

|
| >The movies do sometimes push books.
|
| Unless the movie is a disappointment, although... that could drive people
back
| to the books out of loyalty, maybe.

I've not seen it happen. All that really happens is the already-fans try to
put the crappy movie out of their minds :] See, there's such a
differentiation between the movies and the comics, mainly because people
know that even if they love the movie, the comics are not the same thing.
Granted, a decent movie can re-inspire someone who used to be a comic fan,
but not really 'newly inspire' someone who hasn't had much interest in them.
And let's face it, if you weren't a fan to begin with, there's a much less
chance of you going to see a movie based on a comic. Unless of course, you
didn't know it was a comic originally (like "Men in Black").

Doubtful anything you would have seen :] unless you were REALLY into
independents a few years back. I did colors and penciled the cover to issue
2 of "Fates Five" for Innervision Comics.

Only thing is, for all my color work, he decided to print it black and white
at the last minute (even the Previews ads said 'full color', so a lot of
vendors were pissed).
