Subject: Dish 500 explained???
Okay all, I admit I haven't been keeping up.  Right now I get
top50CD.  I see we can get a free upgrade to dish 500 on the
13th.  Where can I go to get a good description of what I get
by going to dish 500?  A description of all that is necessary
to hook it up?  Can I get the HD HBO with it?

Thanks all
Robb

With the Dish500 you will have a single dish that sees 110 and 119.  You are
currently looking at 119 only right now.

Currently 110 has some PPV, foreign programming and all locals besides NY
and LA.

HD HBO is not current, but one of the planned future offerings.

What is necessary to hook it up all comes in the upgrade kit announced
yesterday.
- Dish500 with mount.
- Second LNB
- Switch (hopefully 2 SW21s because of all the problems with the SW42)
- Free installation.

You get this for $25 if you commit to a year of Top100CD & 1 premium or $99
without the commitment.

Wow Dhartman, since you've located your "Shift" key I'll answer for you
(now if you'd only discover the "space" key).     ;^)

Yes, you can get your free DISH 500 upgrade if you already are a Top 100
+ movie package subscriber. Just call up DISH next Monday (or later),
and give them the number of that credit card you got from Boss Hogg.
They'll charge you $24.99 for shipping and handling. You don't have to
pre-pay for the year of programming. But if for any reason you cancel
before the year is up, the not nice people at DISH will charge said
credit card for the full price of the upgrade.

Any chance you could fix me up with Daisy Mae?

No.  It gets 110/119 only.  You can add a 2nd dish and a fancy switch to get
61.5 thrown into the mix though.  I only want to add 61.5 for Nasa.  If I spent
the $150 for the SW64 switch to do this, I can GUARANTEE the next day Dish
would announce that Nasa is going to be available on 110 <grin>.

You cannot adjust the amount of separation between the LNB's.  Even if you
could, you'd need a much bigger and weirder shaped dish to try and hit 61.5 and
110/119 all at the same time.  In fact, given how far apart they are, it's
probably not even practical.  The difference in elevation and azimuth between
119 and 61.5 is huge.

Instead of a Dish500 you could get 2 Dish300s and the same switches as the
Dish500 and point to 61.5 and 119.  The Dish500 is really not much more than
2 Dish300s locked together in a 9 degree spread.

Seems to me to be a silly reason to dismiss Dish in favor of DTV.

That's pretty silly!

You're going to pass up 500 channels for less than 300 ?  DTV will NEVER be
capable of what Dish is.  It will cost them countless millions.

Knock yourself out.

Yes.   You can point one dish at 61.5 and another at 119 and another at 110 or
any combo of any/all of the above.

You could actually point 2 separate dishes at 110 and 119 if you had them and
that's the exact same thing as dish500.

The idea of dish500 is that it's ONE DISH that's only 2 inches larger than the
one you already have.

Seth, your right, I think. It depends on what is meant by 9 degree
spread. If you are talking about 9 degrees of longitude on the map you are
right, if you are talking about 9 degrees look angle it isn't.

The Dish 500 covers more than 9 degrees look angle but not nearly
enough to catch both 61.5 and 110 or 119. If you live in Tucson, AZ for
example the look angle between 110 and 119 will be 17 degrees. The Dish 500
will catch that 17 degree spread and will work there.

The 61.5, 110, 119 and 148 degree satellite locations are not degrees on
the compass but degrees of longitude on the map of the earth. The satellites
are parked where these 4 lines intersect the equator. As you look at the
satellites as you cross the US the degrees between them will change as you
go from state to state.

If you subtract 61.5 from 119 you get 57.5 degrees in longitude. Here in
Virginia the look angle though is a difference of 92 degrees when you point
one dish at 241, (119 location) and the other at 159, (61.5 location). Way
too far for Dish 500.

I was referring to the difference in the orbital slot.  A good part of the
reason for the "skew" setting is to compensate for the differences in the
look angle.

I wonder if the upgrade is free for someone who has a 119 and 61.5 dish and they want to upgrade to Dish500?  Would that mean a free SW64 switch, or a discount, I wonder?  It doesn't matter to me.  I've already spent $600.  I just wondered if I have a reason to be upset if they're now giving out discounts and freebies.

I'm wondering the same thing. I need the SW64 since I plan to keep
SkyAngel no matter what happens. As far as being upset, don't be. One of the
great secrets of life is learning to be happy with the deal you made and not
spending your time concerned with what others have. You only have reason to
be upset if you were cheated on the deal you agreed to.

    And since it's Christmas:

" Matthew 20:9  "The workers who were hired about the eleventh hour came
and each received a denarius.
10  So when those came who were hired first, they expected to receive more.
But each one of them also received a denarius.
11  When they received it, they began to grumble against the landowner.
12  'These men who were hired last worked only one hour,' they said, 'and
you have made them equal to us who have borne the burden of the work and the
heat of the day.'
13  "But he answered one of them, 'Friend, I am not being unfair to you.
Didn't you agree to work for a denarius?
14  Take your pay and go. I want to give the man who was hired last the same
as I gave you.
15  Don't I have the right to do what I want with my own money? Or are you
envious because I am generous?'"

And that will make for a Happy New Year....

Right Don,
This was the part of the chat where Jim was telling everyone, "no
problem, we'll take care of you". and Charlie stops him and tells him that
was the meeting that he was in but there was another meeting that all that
got changed.

Charlie more or less went on to say that they were working on it and
that they weren't setup now to take care of customers that have already paid
and their anniversary date is after March of 2000.

The last time something like this happened was when they started
charging extra for Superstations and there were some of us who had already
paid for the year..... took me about 6 months to get my bill straight that
time....

I agree.  However, it seems to be my typical run of luck.  I usually buy
things right before the price goes down.  Once I bought one of those
Philips CD-Interactive units.  It cost around $799 when I bought it.
Two weeks later, the price dropped to $599.  I buy an SW64... three
weeks later, the price drops.  Stuff like that.  Of course, some things
are great to have ASAP.  I got a Nintendo 64 before they were even
officially released.  Paid $249.  Now they're $99.  Funny thing is, or
maybe not so funny... I gave my first one away and now I want to get
another one.  But since Nintendo is coming out with yet another console,
I'm going to wait for that and just spend the $249 again.  It's hard to
play old game systems once you're used to these new fangled ones.

I know how you feel. I've got about $1000 in Dish hardware spread around
here and I actually picked up the phone last week to buy the Dish 500 & SW64
and something came up and I hung up.

I was pleased to say the least when Charlie and Jim started talking
about giving the Dish 500 to Dish customers. I listened real close and the
way I took it the switch wasn't part of the deal, but later Charlie went on
to say the guy that comes out to do the install will take care of you. That
sounded kind of like they might make judgment on each person's situation.

He also said they were working on just how to handle the situation of
customers that have already paid for the year. Maybe the Tech Chat will give
us some more information on what to do...
