For those that have been asking 'When will Starz!' be in Dolby Digital?' the
answer is NOW.

Actually, some folks may have seen the notes about this yesterday over on
http://www.dbsforums.com or here in the alt.dbs.echostar newsgroup, but
just in case, in a temporary stint as the town crier:

Echostar/Dish Network is broadcasting STARZ! in DOLBY DIGITAL.

The wait is over.

No more questions in the newsgroup about 'When will Starz! be in Dolby
Digital?'

No more calls to the Charlie Chats about 'When will Starz! be in Dolby
Digital?'

Again, the answer is NOW.

As of yesterday afternoon/evening (8/29/2000), Dish is passing Dolby Digital
for Starz! east.

I guess questions will come up later about 'when will it be on the West
Coast feeds?', but I hope for a while at least that folks are just plain
thankful that it's being passed along at all!!!

(Remember, there are plenty of folks out here -- myself included -- that
don't have expensive home theatre audio systems, so we wouldn't know or care
about Dolby Digital anyway if we didn't see others complaining about it!!)

There have also been reports that Showtime East (Ch 318) was broadcasting in
Dolby Digital yesterday, but that one I'm not sure of (not having equipment
I can check it with and all).

Now the new questions is (do it in your best Gilda Radner's Lubner "whiner"
voice) "How come Starz west isn't in DD?"

Great ! I`ll be calling them to add Starz to my programming and thank them for
their efforts. Showtime yesterday...I saw nothing in DD, even after someones
post here.

LOL!

Bob Haller on www.dbsforums.com has prognosticated (painful condition, I
think) that Odyssey will be added to AT150 and that "soon" (whatever that
really means) Cincinnati and Greenville, SC will be added to the LIL
line-up.

Odyssey is being added, as of now. Haven't heard anything about the Cincy
or Greenville locals tho.

Verified! Starz! is definitely in Dolby Digital. Just watched the
recording I made on my Dishplayer of Bowfinger and my display told me Dolby
Digital 5.1!

Also caught a little of Black Dog earlier and that also is in 5.1. Oh happy
day!

My theory is that Dish is trying to make huge profits on AT150 before
adding more channels which will cost them more. So while we "early
adopters" are paying full price for a not-yet-fleshed-out package,
Echostar is raking in profits. They will probably make less per
subscriber as they add more channels since they will then have to pay
more fees to programmers. I'd take one more shopping channel for every
8 REAL channels added.

Yeah, I'll go along with that. 1 to 8 isn't a bad
percentage, considering that I'll probably ignore 6 out of
the 8 as well. I have mixed feelings about the multiplicity
of channel selections. ClickTV will only allow me 100 on
any single web page, so I'm getting to the point where I
have to throw away channels that I "might" watch, just to
audit new channels to see what programming is on them. I
may be the only one, but I am grateful that Dish doesn't
add more than a few channels every month. With
"everything", I don't have a grid I can view offline that
has all I need.

I'm still extremely surprised that nobody has come up with an offline TV
Guide with proprietary data files for specialized software for TV
listings. Yes, we have the Electronic TV Host, but it's pathetic. The
basic interface is fine, but the listings are incomplete and I don't
think the company is doing well. You can try out their program at
www.tvhost.com and the last two times I've been there, their 1-month
trial key generator has been defective so you end up with a key that
lasts for 99 months. Most of the AT150 channels are not included in the
listings.

Basically I wish either Dish or TV Guide or ClickTV would come out with
a monthly CD-ROM subscription or some software you could download and
you could get a subscription to a weekly or bi-weekly listing. I do not
like accessing the web for this. It's slow and clunky. I want to be
able to save all my searches and run those searches to get a printout of
everything I might be interested in viewing that week. Is it too much
to ask? I guess so. Nobody offers it but TV Host, and as I said,
they're pathetic.

Well, it`s about damn time. I noticed yesterday that when I switched to
channel 350 I was hearing no sound from my Denon AVR 3300 receiver, but
I thought nothing about it. A little while ago I turned to 350 and the
same thing happened. Due to it being in DD, I had to hit the INPUT
button on my 3300 remote before it would process the DD signal. All the
other channels, with their standard sound, were working fine. That
should have tipped me off to it yesterday, but since I have been waiting
close to a year for DD on Starz and I`ve gotten so used to false
promises on the part of Dish, I did not believe that it would actually
be here. Oh well, like you said, can`t wait for a DD 5.1 film. Here`s
hoping they actually broadcast in 5.1.

Well I have the Yamaha V595 and noticed the volume lower than the rest, so I
know its dolby, but not 5.1 because my reciever says dolby digital if it is,
at least the PPV channels I watch sometimes lights up the dolby digital. I
quess I will see what happens.

It looks like only channel 350 has DD. The movie that was on
last night around 9:30pm PDT (I don't remember which one it was) only
had two channels though.
