Sung, of course, to the tune of the old 60's hit, also called "The
Letter", by the Boxtops...

Gimmie a phone cord thirty miles long
Ain't gonna pay full price- I think it's wrong
What am I gonna do?
My friend's dishes are mine too!
Dish Network just wrote me a letter.
Dish Network just wrote me a letter.

Well they wrote me a letter said I couldn't share my DISH account no
more...
"Plug in your phone cord please or you ain't gonna see the Osbournes
no more"
Anyway...

They'll give me a wireless phone jack for free
But unless it reaches Boston it can't help me!
Receivers three and four
Are in Seattle and Sioux Falls
Dish Network just wrote me a letter...
Dish Network just wrote me a letter...

(I realize four-receiver accounts aren't targeted yet, but I couldn't
think of an easily recognizable city name that rhymes with five or
six! Sue me!)

It's nice to find a bit of levity in here. These days, the group sounds
more like a family counseling session...

Yeah, it's kind of sad to see all of the childlike admiration that
many in the NG seemed to have for DISH suddenly dry up over things
like a DVR fee or a phone-line hookup. Some of the posters feel
betrayed like they might have when their parents told them the truth
about Santa Claus!

In some ways, I guess, DISH brought it upon themselves by seeming like
a small company that listened to each and every customer. But like
any company DISH has to make money, and they have shareholders they
are responsible to.

Personally I think this recent "disappointment" stuff will all blow
over. The NG got pretty sullen like this when AT50 jumped from $19.99
to $22.99, when additional receiver fees jumped from $1 to $5, and
(believe it or not!) when DISH committed the agregious "sin" of
(*gasp*) airing PORN!

I doubt it, since its a cultural change at dish, they have lost site of why
people liked and purchased them. The company has huge troubles that arent going
to be fixed overnite.

Wha they realy need is a BIG sub defecion rate to get their attention:):)

Bob, again you are full of IT. You sure have a short
memory. DISH has never been the best run company and they
ALWAYS have had SOME "management" problems and a lot of
people that disagree with them when they have gone through
troubles like this in the past. DISH does NOT have "HUGH
TROUBLES". Most of their current problems are caused
because of one thing: they tried to do TOO much TOO fast
(new receivers, SuperDish, too many software updates because
of changes needed for the SuperDish). YOU are so upset
because YOU have been affected much more than you have in
the past. Most customers have not been affected at all by
DISH's current "problems".

I agree with Todd, this too shall pass. DISH will get their
problems fixed. The biggest "problem" that DISH (and
DirecTV) is going to have in the future is the cable
companies. In many areas, they are really getting their act
together and are starting to roll out DVRs and bundled
service (in some areas cable, hi-speed internet and
telephone service).

DISH has some very intelligent people running their company
and they sure don't need some dummy like you telling them
how to do it.

I got my second receiver in 1996 and the fee was $4.99/month then too!

I've had at least two receivers since the middle of 1996. I think it's
always been $4.99 a month for each additional receiver.

The original DISH pricing (bear with me- I'm working off of memory- I
can't find my original DISH brochures I saved from early 1996!) listed
the dual LNB system for "$299" (actually $599, but it included a
prepaid 1 yr. subscription to AT40 and DISH CD valued at $25/month).
Available as an option was a "standalone receiver" (no model numbers
given, but it was a model 2000) for either $299 or $399 (my memory is
fuzzy- it was seven years ago!) and a $1 (it might have been $1.99)
additional outlet fee.

IIRC, the $5 fee didn't kick in until DISH dropped the standalone
receiver price to $199 (or $249- again, I forget- it's been a long
time!)

So, like with the DVR fee, DISH realized, sadly, the secret to success
in the satellite biz is the same as any other biz- when you say "no
money down, and x dollars a month!" MOST people only hear "NO money
blah, blah, blah".
