Google lists 19,260 articles for this group, and includes spam, junk,
and xposts in the total. Look at altcp for 1995 in Google and see if you
can find altcp anywhere among the xposts and spam.
My archive has no xposts, and little, if any, spam and junk for a total
of 25,164 articles beginning in mid-1994 (I've got a couple thousand
more articles, mostly 'drive-by' posts that are not included in this
cut). What's missing is 2002. I'm sure I've got it somewhere and am
still looking (if anyone has an archive of 2002 (with headers intact, I
can include it in mine, if you like). Also, I haven't included the
xposts originating in altcp. Most of those have to do with something
I'll add, like the Rancho articles, as a supplement to the main archive
(the Rancho posts are included in the main archive, too).
Back in the 1990s propagation and retention of articles had become
'iffy' as the internet grew. I began archiving my own articles in 1994,
and then, as diskspace permitted (my original archive is on 8 floppies
compressed in msdos), the articles of threads and of posters I was
interested in. So, it begins as a personal archive when I returned to
altcp after an hiatus and becomes a more general archive in 1995.
I haven't eyeballed each article. When I come across a bad article,
usually with truncation or the absence of any body text, I check through
the duplicates I have for a complete one. So far I've been able to replace
the bad ones with good.
If you happen across such an article when browsing the archive, please
let me know, and I will fix it if possible.
In re-writing the FAQ, the web version can link to substantial threads
in the archive supplementing the FAQ.
