Schwann, I have always believed you
were onto something with your webtrance
concept. As you know, I have latched
onto your term for a whole series of articles
under the "If this be webtrance..." subject
line. "Webtance" still seems like an ideal
term for describing some things I have
experienced through use of the net. However,
I see it as a creative enhancement for moving
writers and others in new directions. For
people who are not at all interested in taking
their creative minds into unexplored places,
it is unlikely they will experience the sort
of adventures you and I and some others do.
If people have hum-drum minds to begin
with, and are content with that, and are not
consciously striving to explore any new
creative frontiers, then I would suspect that
the part of the net they prefer to hang out in
will become as humdrum as network television.
As you many remember, I refer to the
thoughtstream, the part of the net where the
most creative activities take place. In
other words, the thoughtstream flows through
the websites which offer the most creative and
intellectual challenge, and the newsgroups which
feature the most original postings. Obviously,
that is an ever changing thing. In theory, you
could map the thoughtstream, but it would be
through a website, on a computerized map, because
the thoughtstream is always shifting. For
instance (and I've already noted this in an
earlier post today) a few months ago the map
might have shown misc.creativty as highlighted
in beautiful, swirling colors, because then a
lot of very original and uniquely
creative postings were showing, but right now
many of the same people are not posting there,
so the m.c. group would be shown in a rather
lackluster hue, meaning the creative content
is down. Of course, I am not seriously
suggesting that this "mapping" would be done,
but I DO maintain that the great unmapped
thoughtstream is there, and that folks like
you and me and countless others are a part of
it. Yet millions of others have no interest
in the creative aspects of the net, and they
are not part of the thoughtstream at all,
and in fact would in many cases cynically
deny its existence, knowing they can never
be part of it. So, from my point of view,
I really have no interest in converting
others to the webtrance experiece. It (at
least this "whatever-it-is" I have
experienced on the net) works for me, but
if I did not have an interest in exploring
and developing the creative aspects of my
mind, I likely would have missed it entirely...

Thanks for your thoughts on webtrance. I note that it now has nearly
3000 iterations on the WWW.
Though I wan't born in a creative groove, creativity now rules with
me. However, most of 'them' aren't into it...yet
alt.cyberpunk.chatsubo admires creativity, however misplaced:)
Aside: Posting to usenet is a constant challenge, and recently i
uncovered my first post to usenet, though i'd been following the
'alien' and 'ufo' groups for six months before i got annoyed enough to
post...in those days you could meet the minds of Prof Scott Littleton
(now a good friend, visited him in LA), and John Shirley (stayed at
John's place outside San Francisco in 'snake valley), Terence Mckenna
(met him here, then visited him in Hawaii)and Rudi Rucker (only
email), Bruce Sterling (email) and Janel(sp?) Rodenberry (email),
nowadays it's the wannabe BMW driven, fuck-you, mob that rules, not
those enquiring minds i met back in the early 90's...last gasp of the
20th century and all that...for your amusement here's my first
post....

have an attorney to handle my responses when I am on the road, which
will be most of the time from now on. I will be away in Europe soon

Hey, some people at work were talking about this Hypertext Markup
something or other that allows you to put text and graphics together
on something called "web pages," rather than just dump a bunch of
PDFs, JPGs, and GIFs into a directory. You should check it out.
