I've just watched Mayor Mel Lastman speak to the city on the news
and was so incredibly touched by something he said that had not
even occurred to me. Apparently, his office has been swamped with
calls from Torontonians offering their homes to all the people that will
be stranded (being the biggest airport in Canada, I'm assuming, and
the closest to NY we're getting a lot of the diverted planes here). It just
does my heart good to know this city still has a heart.

He also said what I'm sure many other cities' mayors etc. will be saying,
that all of our emergency personnel is at your disposal and we'll send
anything we can to help out. And a reminder to give blood. As horrifying
as it is to think about, they're going to need a lot of blood out there today.

I heard President Bush say during his speech, something along the lines of our
seeing "the worst of human nature, and we responded with the best America has
to offer." I think that sums it up perfectly, and I'm glad to hear that's the
same in Canada...

This reminds me of a song I just downloaded today, a song that was a tribute
to Americans, written and sung by a Canadian, in the 70s. It's called
"The Americans" by Gordon Sinclair. It was a spoken word recording and
although the facts are dated by now, the principles still hold true.
