Earthquakes have happened throughout eons of time and they have marked a
number of key events over time. In the Old Testament, the Prophet Elijah,
who was the last prophet alive under the reign of Ahab and his evil wife,
Jezebel, was in hiding, pondering and praying, concerned for the condition
of the people. According to the account, the Lord sent him a message which
said, in effect,
"Elijah, what are you DOING?"
Elijah answered saying, "I had to come to save my life. I hoped to be closer
to the Lord here. I don't know where to go from here. What does the Lord
want me to do next? Have I done all that I was supposed to do?" Most of the
children of Israel had, in the words 1 Kings 19:9 forsaken the covenant,
thrown down altars to God and killed the prophets. Somehow, that has a
familiar ring to it for America in 1999.
Byron Merrill, in his book "Elijah - Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow"
(Bookcraft) notes "In the midst of his reflection and prayer, worry and
wondering, Elijah was impressed that the Lord was coming and that he should
go out to meet him." With the end of the 20th century and the second
millennium after the death of Jesus Christ, there are a growing number of
people who also seem impressed that the Lord is coming and they should
prepare.
Elijah went out, thinking he would meet the Lord, but to his surprise, "he
was met by dramatic demonstrations of the power of God over the elements of
the earth. First, there was an incredible windstorm of such velocity as to
break the rocks of the mountains around him. Then came an earthquake to rend
and crack the earth to its foundation, causing upheavals of everything the
wind had left intact. Next, a great fire consumed all around him. In
each case, Elijah simply observed, having seen the manifestations of the
Lord's power many times before. Anticipating an encounter with Deity, in
each instance he acknowledged the Lord's power but realized that 'the Lord
was not in the wind...the earthquake... [nor] the fire."
The Lord spoke to him in a "still small voice."
You probably remember the freak tornado which hit downtown Salt Lake City
without warning last week. You also may have read an account in
yesterday's issue of The Turkish Daily News from Ankara that the death toll
in Tuesday's killer quake could get as high as 40,000. Many thousands more
have been injured and many villages and small settlements which have been
totally cut off from the outside world since the quake struck Izmit in the
heart
of Turkey's industrial area are rubble. An unnamed government source said
that many destroyed areas are simply being sealed off - with many of the
dead remaining entombed in the wreckage.
The Turkish Daily News reports that, "Meanwhile, the fire at the Tupras
refinery in Izmit is raging out of control." Harmonie Toros of The
Associated Press reported from the scene that with Turkey's largest oil
refinery burning out of control, police ordered frightened and sobbing
families to flee on Wednesday, leaving missing relatives trapped in the
rubble.
The fire threatens to engulf an entire field of 30 storage tanks containing
700,000 tons of crude oil. "Authorities feared such an inferno could spill
over to a nearby fertilizer plant with 8,000 tons of hazardous ammonia.
Planes from Germany and France dropped chemical foam on the fires trying to
stop its spread. They were later joined by aircraft from Russia and Greece."
"If the fire spreads ... it would be a new disaster for Izmit," Memduh Oguz,
the governor of the city, told The Associated Press.
Thousands of people, mostly on foot and carrying their belongings,
reportedly streamed away from the plant. Police tried to block cars from the
evacuation zone five kilometers (three miles) from the fire. The Turkish
government made an urgent appeal for crude oil supplies to be delivered
because stocks which are going up in smoke in Izmit will have to be
replenished without delay to avoid fuel shortages. Many oil companies
responded to the appeal,
but due to confusion they did not know where to offload their supplies, oil
industry sources told the Turkish Daily News.
Elsewhere around Izmit, the misery showed no signs of easing. With their
homes destroyed, their means of livelihood in ruins, food supplies already
growing thin in some of the most damaged areas, water, and electricity
unavailable in the hardest hit areas, the injured and dying lacked even
medical care. The quake collapsed the main operating room at the city's
major hospital, leaving doctors with little option other than the most basic
care for the
many injured.
"It's just like a war," Dr. Fevzi Celayir told The AP.
As a matter of fact, it has many of the same components that the war against
Yugoslavia had. The Chemical and Engineering News reported the bombing of
both refineries and a chemical plant in Pancevo, on the Danube River about
10 miles northeast of Belgrade. "The North Atlantic Treaty Organization's
aerial bombardment of Serbia has specifically targeted refineries and
petrochemical and fertilizer facilities with devastating impact, according
to both
NATO and Serbian sources. The biggest chemical target in Serbia has been a
petrochemical and fertilizer complex in Pancevo. This complex is adjacent to
an oil refinery that has been attacked several times since NATO's air
campaign started on March 24. On April 8, the Pentagon claimed that this
refinery, one of the two largest in Serbia, was no longer capable of
operating.
"The major strikes against the Pancevo chemical facilities came on the
nights of April 15 and 17. The units destroyed were HIP Petrohemija's
ethylene, vinyl chloride, polyvinyl chloride, and mercury-cell chlor-alkali
plants and HIP Azotara's ammonia and fertilizer facilities. According to an
April 16 statement by Slobodan Tresac, director general of HIP Petrohemija,
which was distributed via the Internet, the ethylene and vinyl chloride
units were
hit directly in the first attack, which also damaged the chlor-alkali and
PVC units. According to Tresac, a fire broke out and very large quantities
of toxic materials were released, injuring a large number of people, but he
reports no deaths.
"The second attack finished off the chlor-alkali and PVC units and destroyed
the ammonia and fertilizer facilities. The information service of the
Yugoslav Army Supreme Command claims that 70,000 people had to be evacuated,
presumably temporarily, because of the attacks. The plant is about three
miles from the center of Pancevo, a city with a population of about 150,000.
An e-mailed statement received by C&EN from the president of the Serbian
Chemical Society, Miroslav J. Gasic, claims that huge volumes of chlorine,
mercury, hydrocarbons, ammonia, nitrogen and sulfur oxides, phosphorus
compounds, and hydrogen halides have been released as a result of these
attacks. It also states that "a large number of people have had to be
treated for poisoning."
"The society appeals to the scientific and professional public to help stop
the "targeting of industrial complexes which release toxic, teratogenic,
carcinogenic materials to prevent further spread of the ecological
catastrophe in the Balkan Peninsula and Europe." A statement on the Internet
from a group of chemistry-related University of Belgrade faculty expresses
similar sentiments. It calls for a cessation of "the extremely dangerous
policy of
NATO" of attacking chemical plants before "an ecological catastrophe
results."
At a press briefing on April 19, a Pentagon spokesman dismissed such
concerns. He pointed to Serbian press reports that the plants went into
controlled shutdown as soon as they were attacked. He added that the U.S.
believes that some very volatile gases may have been released and that they
quickly dispersed.
"However, the reports of considerable health problems resulting from the
Pancevo bombing are not inconsistent with U.S. estimates of chemical hazards
as reflected in risk management plans prepared by U.S. chemical facility
operators at the behest of the Environmental Protection Agency. For example,
a sudden release of 650 tons of chlorine from storage at one plant is
estimated to have an end-point distance of at least 25 miles. Within this
distance,
according to EPA, people exposed for an hour could face "serious health
effects." U.S. chemical and environmental experts contacted by C&EN say
there could be short-term ecological damage, such as defoliation, if the
attacks on the Pancevo chemical plants were as devastating as reported by
the Serbs. But they are skeptical of claims of a long-term ecological
catastrophe."
I am a chemist and I know who is right. When Clinton bombed a refinery and
nearby chemical plant the official word from the Pentagon was to pooh-pooh
any environmental concerns - although I note that when wearing an
environmentalist cap, Clinton and Al Gore have much to say about the
"dangers" to the public near refineries or chemical plants - even those
which have not been blown up. There is a demand, in fact, that, according to
Environmental
Protection Agency's Administrator Carol Browner says, "Those who caused the
problem should have the responsibility to clean up the problem."
There is a problem in Pancevo. It was caused by bombs dropped by NATO,
mostly by American bombers. The problem in Izmit, according to most
insurance policies, was caused by an act of God. In a matter of minutes.
It appears, God destroyed far more property and killed 7 or 8 times more
people than the 70,000 NATO bombs and missiles managed to do in 3 months. Is
this a temporary problem, as the Pentagon claimed, or is it really a serious
problem?
Perhaps it is time for world leaders, beginning with Bill Clinton, to
re-read 1 Kings, Chapter 19.
We've now seen the power of God in the tornado, the earthquake, and the
fire, plus a bit of drought, war and famine, as promised for these days.
Perhaps it's now time for us to listen to the still small voice, that Byron
Merrill refers to as "impressions of the Spirit" which spoke to Elijah's
"innermost self - the unmistakable voice of the Spirit, quiet, serene and
peaceful. The miracle of the voice of the Spirit - superseded all the
miracles of the natural elements" which Eljah had just witnessed in the
wind, the earthquake and the fire.
And then, perhaps, the American Congress and the President just might come
up with a different answer than that which the Senate voted 97-2 in favor of
just a few weeks ago.
Not only did the Senate refuse to take responsibility to clean up the
problem America, with NATO's help, caused in Pancevo, but voted to BLOCK any
effort by other nations or international organizations to help solve the
problem we caused by bombing an unprotected city and its civilian
population.
Senators, and President Clinton and members of the House - look at the
destruction in Izmit by the earthquake, and the destruction you approved in
Pancevo, and ask yourselves how YOU intend to answer the question the Lord
asked Elijah not once, but twice: "What doest thou here?"

survived. At my health club alone, there are people who have lost relatives.
I mean, there I am in Kundalini Yoga listening to new age tapes and learning
to relax each separate vertabra, and a woman mentions she has just come back
from Istanbul and they have no water or electricity there in over a hundred
degrees heat and she is at Yoga trying to handle losing relatives..

While you were chatting with the couch potatoes at your health club and
exchanged recipes for roast pig, I was visiting the local museum and doing
some serious thinking along with other intellectuals.
We were looking at some paintings by the 15th-century Flemish painter,
Hieronymous Bosch. Interesting, but pretty weird stuff. Bosch was sort of a
godfather to the Surrealist school of painters, who came along 450 years
later: Salvador Dali and his limp clocks, for example.
I don't know much about Bosch's life, but he was a moralist, and his
paintings, with their nightmare quality, reflected his concern for the moral
condition of Dutch society in his time. I thought to myself as I
studied his paintings, "My God, what would Bosch be painting if he were
alive today in America?" I shuddered when I thought about it. This is indeed
an age which lends itself to surrealist treatment. Public life today lacks
some important elements of reality.
I was looking at Bosch's paintings right after having seen Bill Clinton on
television preaching about his opposition to a tax-cut bill which the
Republican Congress had just passed, and that's what made me think about
what Bosch might have painted in the Clinton era. I mean, there was this
unspeakable piece of filth up there at his lectern, wagging his finger and
moralizing about doing what's good for the American people, and no one was
hooting him down or even laughing at him. All of the media people were
taking him seriously and showing him respect: not even an expression of
distaste on the news commentator's face or a hint of contempt in his voice.
I could imagine millions of other television viewers around the country
soberly watching this same newscast and seeing nothing amiss. I believe that
Howdy Doody or Fred Flintstone could have been up there on the speaker's
podium with the Presidential seal, saying the same things Clinton said, and
as long as the media people treated it seriously the viewers would see
nothing amiss.
I don't know what the moral condition of Dutch society was like in the 15th
century, but it certainly couldn't have been worse than that of American
society today. Actually, I guess it's not really the moral condition of the
American public I'm complaining about. It's the surreal nature of public
life in America today. And I am surprized that you who did not raise a
finger to stop the burning of Serbian children for a three month period, now
you shed crocodilian tears for Turks, who by the way were also cheering the
dropping of bombs on our Christian Serb brothers, acting like Clinton's
personal hounds. Well, I am not a cheerleader, but I as hell will not hide
my satisfaction for the demolition of a bunch of heathens who morally and
actively participated in the holocaust of Serbia. Now let us not be
hypocrites and wage our fingers, or shake our heads at the divine
providence. You know damn well, that at least I, have a serious problem
with those who commit genocide and surely I do not forget easily. Have a
nice day and read my original post again. Giving help to Turkey and
ignoring the plight of Serbs is a crime that I will not forgive. And if I
could paint like Hieronymous, I would make all of you look like what you
really are. Hypocritical crows in human forms.
