May I suggest a few resources:
Hudson Valley Network
http://www.hvnet.com/
Online Travel Guide to Upstate NY
http://www.roundthebend.com/
Absolutely Albany
http://www.albany.org
...and some suggestions:
- Avoid Lake George in the summer unless you are into the high priced
touristy type attractions. But, if you stop there, go the Queensbury
factory outlets (just sound of the village- for shopping) or the Great
Escape amusement park.
- Saratoga is the August place to be of course.....but it will cost you.
- Other places I personally enjoy along your route include Storm King, Opus
40 & Woodstock(north of West Point), Olana (Catskill/Hudson exit), Albany
Institute of History & Art or the NYS Museum, and Schroon Lake (north of
Lake George).
Have Fun!!

While it is an excellent place to visit, most people would find the State
Museum has more of interest, unless their interests are Albany area history and
art.
However, if someone is planning to visit the AIHA, check as to whether they are
open. They were going to close down for 1-2 years during a rebuilding program,
and may have already closed.
I'd suggest getting off I-87 (Exit 30 would be a good place to start) and
taking a side trip through the High Peaks area of the Adirondacks. There's so
much to see there, it might be a temptation to drop Montreal as a destination
(although that's a great destination, too).
The Visitor Centers at Newcomb and Paul Smiths are good, and the Adirondack
Museum in Blue Mountain Lake is fabulous.
