various movie theatres. Today, Dee & I saw the rebroadcast of
Donizetti's The Daughter of the Regiment ("La fille du régiment" on the
French economy...)
It was terrific! Natalie Dessay is the female opera reincarnation of
Charlie Chaplin, & Juan Diego Flórez hit all the high Cs. and threw in a
high D flat later on. Dee told me that all the old ladies (of whom she
was the youngest) in the restroom at intermission (in American,
"half-time") were swooning & bobbysoxing about him.
But here's the thing. Marie, the "daughter" of the title, is the
quintessential brat. I mean, the whole regiment is regarded as her
"father."
So I propose this as the Official Brat Opera. Are there any other
candidates?

Excellent suggestion. I can't think of any other possibility. Maybe
HMS Pinafore, though that is an operetta. Isn't the love interest the
daughter of the admiral?

Are you being politically correct, Danbob? <g> Oh, and I was wrong,
she's the daughter of the captain and loves/is loved by an able
seaman.
One website mentioned that naming a warship after a girl's undergarmet
was very tongue in cheek - but the British had some very strange names
for some of their warships. HMS Surprise and HMS Nutmeg come right to
mind.

The Drink Drink thing is called "The Drinking Song" & is from an
operetta called The Student Prince.
I'm sorry to find that your old man was not properly educated. But ol'

We actually had an earthquake here the other night. Just a little 5.2
roller, but it was very weird. We live within eyesight of both Shasta
and Lassen, so it's a little discomfiting when the ground starts
jumping around. Take 'em over tornadoes any day, though.

We had a couple dance around last night. North and west of us. The one
up by Pawnee even made the international news. Some damage was done,
but, I haven't heard of any injuries.
I'm hoping that this is another quiet year. It seems that in recent
years others get hit harder than we do. I'm not wishing them on anyone
else.
You can get away from a tornado (in this hemisphere at any rate) by,
basically, going left. You can hide from it by digging a hole. An
earthquake? Getting outside works if there isn't anything close that
is above you. I'm told that standing in a doorway helps. Is there
something you can do about volcanoes? Some seem relatively well
behaved: Mauna Loa comes to mind. Some, Mt. St. Helens, for instance,
were a tad on the ugly side of behaviour. Given the dust we had here
when Helens did its thing, how do you get out of the way of a volcano?

off coupon (found a DVD on the life & music of Sibelius) when what to my
wondering eyes should appear but a freshly minted DVD of the very
broadcast of the Daughter of the Regiment that I talk about below. It
looks like the Met has an aggressive business plan going. I was sorely
tempted to buy it, but the Sibelius was a Gramophone recommended DVD so
after a struggle, which I either won or lost, I bought the Sibelius...

Thanks. They were a bit south of us by 20-30 miles. Apparently one
did cross the James going north and went over the Penninsula in an
area that isn't very populated. The pictures show extensive damage
but the Saturday paper says the value is not enough for federal aide.
I'm glad the government is watching how it spends the taxpayers'
money.

A good question. You know they're saying that Yellowstone has all of
the potential of a Super Volcano. Apparently the caldera's really
bulging at this point and if it blew you could have half the country
coated in volcanic ash.
But that's only if it happens before the asteroid hits us, or the ice
caps melt or we have a devastating ice age.

Yes, they're being ultra fiscally responsible, aren't they? Odd how
they put FEMA under the homeland security umbrella and there was all
of that Katrina money pumped in one end and very little came out of
the other end, at least in terms of rebuilding the city.
Of course, the Dems have their problems, too. When I heard about
Elliot Spitzer getting busted with a $5,000 a night hooker, the first
thought I had was, "Fiscal irresponsibility! Did he get competing
bids?"
Oh, well, glad to hear the government got screwed once without
Halliburton being involved.

I live in Knoxville and there are LOTS of weird things going on: if
anyone goes I-40 or 640 you better be prepared for LOTS of traffic.
It will last for a year and a half.
Sometimes there are good things: The Platters will be here this
month, Robert Plant and Allison Kraus were touring here. Combination
of bluegrass and hard rock. But it worked. (I did not see it). And
yes, there are earthquakes here as well, we just had one little bitty
one that no one here felt but it was further west. How do you think
the Mississippi got rerouted? Look up Reelfoot Lake!

I'm currently very peeved with Tennessee. I ordered a satellite
internet system from a company in Tennessee called Skyways. They
claim on their site that it will work anywhere with a clear view of
the southern sky. $225.00 later, the satellite arrives and it has a
web page - NOT listed on their main site - telling how to find the
satellite so you can point the dish at it. The satellite is not in
the southern sky, it's in the extreme southeastern sky and it's at
such a low altitude that you can't even get it if you're in the
mountains.
So, I've been calling them and calling them trying to get out of the
year long contract. I get connected with someone who sounds like
Barney Fife on downers and who puts me on hold for 15 minutes until
another Barney Fife picks up and drawls, "Now what was it yew were
wantin'?" And then he puts me on hold for another 15 minutes, and
then another Barney comes on and tells me that the Barney I need to
talk to is in a meeting and I should call back.
The email contact form on the Skyways site doesn't work - natch - so
I'm going to have to send them a registered letter. And if I still
get the hillbilly two step from them I'm going to start contacting the
state attorney generals offices and the postal system. It's very,
very, very irritating.

about their service, but I didn't recall any issues with getting to

No, it's skyway, and I thought they were out of Tennessee. Whoever
they are, they're doing that, "I'm just a dumb yokel," passive
aggressive routine that some Southerners play on Yankees.
Thanks for the link! I actually read the DSL reports section before
ordering from them, and they looked good. I'm supposing that if I
were still living in Texas the satellite would work fine, but not in
the mountains. I totally acknowledged my part in the screw up and I
wasn't asking for any of my money back. I'm just damn well not
willing to pay for a service I can't use for a whole year.
