NAPLES, Italy — First-grade teacher Kara Johnson’s desk spills over with
handmade gifts, home-baked treats and notes of appreciation.

In another corner of her class a vase holds roses of every color — additional
tokens from adoring students.

"It’s not the gifts, but the thought and time the kids have put into it,"
Johnson, a first-year Department of Defense Dependents Schools teacher at the
Naples elementary school, said Wednesday. "The kids get excited about giving me
things, and that’s fun to see."
