It occurred to me today that I graduated from a high school that no
longer exists in a country that no longer exists.

P.S. My high school still exists but not in the same location or buildings.
What had been a home converted into a high school (kitchen was school
office; L/R social studies/geography/history; D/R foreign languages; Den
English and Literature; B/R 1 math classes; B/R 2 sciences; B/R 3
Portuguese) was replaced with a real, honest to goodness school facility the
year after I graduated. K-8 and the library/theater were in a different
building. The land was worth millions and was sold within a few years.The
institution moved to a new location. Sadly, the new location was quickly
surrounded by slums (where the Pope gave away his ring). Now the whole
school is moving to another part of the city. I don't know what will happen
to the old buildings. They were very modern but the location is just unsafe
for international students. My graduating class was large; there were
thirty-four of us.

That's very Buddhist of you, Harmon. The more we meditate on
impermanence, the more virtuous we become.

I had that problem with disappearing houses when I lived in Denton.
The university kept expanding and turning all of the places I'd lived
into parking lots.

Odd feeling for a Brat, too, because you can generally go back to the
bases where you lived and find your old house.

Of the 4 high schools I attended the one in Africa is now in its own country
now, not a province of another country, but it is closed and the US has
moved on (Asmara American) and of the 3 here in the states 1 has been torn
down and rebuilt in another location (MD) 1 partialy burned down and we
continued to use the good part till they finaly turned it into condo's and
built a new one (MASS) and the last one (NH) also had a fire (many years
after I left) but was rebuilt and is still being used.

I thought I had it bad when the high school is Verdun was torn down. I
guess a whole country changing is worse. At least I can return and
look over the foundations. That isn't an option for some here. K-Town
school is still around, but would I be able to get clsoe enough to
look at it?

Mine was in the Pattonville housing area, Ludwigsburg, West Germany.
There seems to be some sort of successor school in Patch barracks on the
other side of Stuttgart.

Harmon,

I assume it is fenced in now and the public can't get inside anymore.
Though I haven't tried.

You may recall that I graduated from SAHS. There are some good
pictures of the buildings on the web. You have to do a bit of browsing
in German. The SAHS site has a collection of past and present
pictures. And, if you know where to look Google Earth gives a pretty
good picture of Pattonville and the school.

It is a strange feeling.

Now, where did I put that DOD diploma?
