Old Hawai`i: The best of times

In the course of writing Retire Healthy, Wealthy and Wise in Paradise
I spent many days at the University of Hawai`i library. One of the
findings was the remarkable state of health and the beauty of the
people. The men were tall and handsome, very athletic. The women were
attractive and vibrant. Everyone showed a high level of happiness and
excitement in all activities.
Now all those wonderful times seem to have evaporated.

Does a man have to be tall and handsome and very athletic to be happy? Does
a woman have to be attractive and vibrant to be happy? The obvious answer
should be, that happiness is a frame of mind, that it does not matter
whether they are handsome, or athethic, or attractive to be happy.

Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder.
I noted that historic records show strikingly happy, healthy, handsome
and beautiful Hawaiians living in times past.

Good point. Don't like to be around people who seem to be mad all the time.
Love to be around people who are always smiling. And their looks does not
matter. A good looking person who is mad all the time, is not attractive to
me.

Happiness is the key factor to health, wealth, wisdom and longevity.
The practice of happiness is well demonstrated in all levels of
society. Even in the apparent poor parts of the world the people seem
to intuitively know that their attitude plays a very important role in
the wellbeing of the society. It is also remarkable that most of the
best things in the world are free. Sunrises, sunsets, ocean waters,
countryside, sky, stars....
