Wouldn't such an island give us a good idea of what Hawaii looked like
before taro, etc.?

Hawai`i is a special place where the volcanic activity continues to
create the newest land mass on the planet. The climate is ideal. One
can choose the temperature and the weather conditions by living in
your favorite location. Elevation and windward/leeward communities
allow one to live where you feel the best. The views are always
spectacular and always changing.

For humans to survive, you need a coupld of things. Water and the ability
to feed the humans who inhabit that island. Without those two things humans
cannot survive and thrive.

Is it possible to survive without coconuts and taro which were brought
in by settlers?

It is a function of the number of people on the islands. When there are few
people, the islands can easily support the population. But as we now see,
with our current population, the island cannot support the population
without support from outside the islands.
