The truly sad part is that the passing of Ray Charles may be overlooked
by many in the shadow of President Reagan's death. Both men are equally
deserving of that final moment in the spotlight.

Actually, that makes 4 if you count the wonderful actress Anna Lee who died
recently. She was on General Hospital for a few decades as Lila Quartermaine-
but you may know her from her many movies including "Whatever Happened to Baby
Jane?" (as the neighbor, Mrs. Bates) and "The Sound of Music" (as Sister
Margaretta- who helps disable the Nazi's car).

I was thinking today about the time Brother Ray was the musical guest on "SNL"
(late 1970s). The sketch was a parody of one of Don Kirshner's "History of
Rock'n'Roll" bits. The scene: a mythical recording session in 1959. The song
to be taped was "What'd I Say", but there would be TWO versions. The first one
recorded was intended for "white" audiences, and was performed in an
exaggerated style that was more suited for Pat Boone: the melody was sung
properly (no "blue notes"!) and the lyrics were grammatically correct. (Boone
actually preformed this way...ever hear him do "Tutti Frutti"?)

Then Ray laid down his take, perhaps the hottest version since his kickass '59
concert at Herndon Stadium in Atlanta. He pretty much burned down the NBC
studios. Ray's recording in the sketch was intended for the "Negro" market,
since in those days white people didn't listen to R&B, and vice versa.

Of course, the whole skit was good old SNL irony: Ray's record crossed over
like wildfire; his biggest hit, "I Can't Stop Loving You," is an easy-listening
remake of a country song! The SNL piece also poked fun at "pop" covers of R&B
records, which "sanitized" the soul right out of the originals to make them
safe for suburban listeners.

One last point: not many people today remember that Elvis Presley was, at
first, very popular with black listeners. In fact, he is the only artist to
have the same record reach #1 on the pop, R&B, AND country charts...and, IIRC,
he did it THREE times! So, despite the machinations of the era's cultural
guardians, there was plenty of crossover between the audiences. Brother Ray
(who at one time recorded for "Crossover Records") was just one of the great
beneficiaries.
