Consider the purpose of a horse show nail.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/For_Want_of_a_Nail_(proverb)
"For Want of a Nail
For want of a nail the shoe was lost.
For want of a shoe the horse was lost.
For want of a horse the rider was lost.
For want of a rider the message was lost.
For want of a message the battle was lost.
For want of a battle the kingdom was lost.
And all for the want of a horseshoe nail."
So, was the purpose of the nail the winning or losing of a kingdom or
something much greater? If we can only see the beginning of something and
not the end we might not be able to judge it but only to research it.
I submit that we can not judge most things because we can not see the thing
in its entirety only what is visible at a moment in time.
Trying to make a final judgment of great importance requires looking beyond
the first glimpse to the Macro and the next Macro and so on.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Landscape_archaeology
"Landscape archaeology is the study of the ways in which people in the past
constructed and used the environment around them. Landscape archaeology is
inherently multidisciplinary in its approach to the study of culture, and is
used by both pre-historical, classic, and historic archaeologists. The key
feature that distinguishes landscape archaeology from other archaeological
approaches to sites is that there is an explicit emphasis on the study of
the relationships between material culture, human alteration of
land/cultural modifications to landscape, and the natural environment. The
study of landscape archaeology (also sometimes referred to as the
archaeology of the cultural landscape) has evolved to include how landscapes
were used to create and reinforce social inequality and to announce one's
social status to the community at large."
If one uses an environment one changes it. One can not dip their foot into
the same river twice.
One can study what the new river is like however.
If one finds an archaeological object under water one can brush away the
sand and see more of the item. Much of life is brushing away the sand and
discovering the culture of unknown people.
Happy exploring and
