Consider the purpose of a horse show nail.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/For_Want_of_a_Nail_(proverb)
"For Want of a Nail

For want of a nail the shoe was lost.
For want of a shoe the horse was lost.
For want of a horse the rider was lost.
For want of a rider the message was lost.
For want of a message the battle was lost.
For want of a battle the kingdom was lost.
And all for the want of a horseshoe nail."

So, was the purpose of the nail the winning or losing of a kingdom or
something much greater? If we can only see the beginning of something and
not the end we might not be able to judge it but only to research it.
I submit that we can not judge most things because we can not see the thing
in its entirety only what is visible at a moment in time.
Trying to make a final judgment of great importance requires looking beyond
the first glimpse to the Macro and the next Macro and so on.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Landscape_archaeology
"Landscape archaeology is the study of the ways in which people in the past
constructed and used the environment around them. Landscape archaeology is
inherently multidisciplinary in its approach to the study of culture, and is
used by both pre-historical, classic, and historic archaeologists. The key
feature that distinguishes landscape archaeology from other archaeological
approaches to sites is that there is an explicit emphasis on the study of
the relationships between material culture, human alteration of
land/cultural modifications to landscape, and the natural environment. The
study of landscape archaeology (also sometimes referred to as the
archaeology of the cultural landscape) has evolved to include how landscapes
were used to create and reinforce social inequality and to announce one's
social status to the community at large."
If one uses an environment one changes it. One can not dip their foot into
the same river twice.
One can study what the new river is like however.
If one finds an archaeological object under water one can brush away the
sand and see more of the item. Much of life is brushing away the sand and
discovering the culture of unknown people.
Happy exploring and

Consider the purpose of a horseshoe nail. Or at least he meant to. Perhaps
both messages are of value just as for communications people it is of value
to consider 5 blind men examining an elephant. They disagreed violently
because to one holding the trunk the elephant felt like a fire hose. For
one holding a leg the elephant felt like a tree trunk. For one holding the
tail the elephant felt like a rope and so on. Perhaps the question is, how
does one best research the world around us on all planes with limited tools?
We can see life on one dimension although it must exist on many dimensions
because we can see effects not related to this dimension.
We can only learn as we grow older and have more experience and get to know
what others believe.
Elf heads off to the Cuddleland Library to see what others believe they have
found in their lifetimes through the centuries.

The purpose of the horse-shoe nail is to keep the horse shoe on the
horse. The purpose of keeping the horse shoe on the horse is to
protect the feet/hooves of the horse from the wear and tear of
clipping long distances on others' behalves. If there is a point in
the parable it is to say that neglect of minor details in work or
maintenance can have long term follow on consequences.
On other things, we all interpret based on our own experience, and we
interpret through the lens of our values. A society also interprets
past history based on its values, and the values the dominant tier
wishes to promote. Many read things or see through the cultural
constructs of our society. The words we use, and the ideas we envisage
are cultural models which we use to describe unknown phenomena. Many
cultural constructs exist which are logically at odds with each other
but many people have beliefs that come from more than one source, that
sometimes they believe equally despite being diametrically conflicting
with each other. Celebrating solstices or consuming fertility symbols
in celebration of purportedly Christian festivals. There are things we
say and believe to be truth or facts which are in fact culturally
developed ideas or ways of viewing the world, but because we are so
embedded in it we can not see how our thoughts are shaped. Such as our
notion of 'normal', or the former belief that the world was flat. Even
our notion of 'infinity' because in some ways we can not either
conceive of our universe being 'finite' - because the notion of
boundaries or edges in itself suggests something beyond the
boundaries, nor in the notion of 'infinity' which is beyond our
comprehension. Perhaps that is why we suggest the universe curves in
on itself and the idea that the further you go, the more you come back
to your starting point, which in itself still suggests something
outside. We see what we are taught to see, and trying to see beyond
that gives us a headache. It can sometimes also make life seem
pointless, because when you need to earn a crust, pondering a lot on
the universe does not help with that. However we do sometimes move
beyond the seeing of our upbringing, and come to realise that either
things are not quite as we saw them, because I would like to say that
we see things differently when we are younger than when we are older -
partly because of changed roles in life, but also the learning of
alternate views can change our view on things, sometimes for the
better, sometimes for the worse, but we also learn to recognise our
culturally acquired blind spots and learn to look beyond them if we
choose.
Is this fun?
