The main pitfall is that it takes a long time to arrive, usually 1-2 weeks,
plus you get what you pay for so your bag will be the quality you'd expect
for 99p or slightly better if you're lucky. DealExtreme also operate from
Hong Kong but the postage is free.

Sometimes the goods are ok, sometimes they're crap, but for that price
you're not risking too much...
Electrical stuff - particularly mains electrical stuff should raise
alarm bells, as they don't have fused 13A plugs - although the pin
arrangement is the same as ours. The cheaper the product, the more
likely the power supply will keel over rapidly, as happened with my
IDE->USB adaptor within about a month :-}
Have you tried places like Argos to see if they have similar items ? -
I recently got a leather camera case for, IIRC £2.99 - to hold my
hacked Navi-go GPS
Other than that, you'd be surprised what bargains can be had - just be
wary of low feedback sellers and you should be ok !

If you return the item as faulty (or whatever) then you may get your
£0.99 back, but not necessarily the rest. Check that the item isn't
available here in Poundland or cheaper from http://www.dealextreme.com
in Hong Kong (where their postage is amazingly cheap)
I've had no real problems so far with international eBay goods I've
purchased from the US, China, Hong Kong, Germany and Greece. Go for it!

How reliable are Dealextreme? Any experiences please?

USD. At a decent exchange rate, too.
I've ordered from them several times. I've only had one problem - where
they were out of stock of an item and it was Chinese New Year over there
so my query about it got lost. They then changed the returns/queries
system to one that looks quite solid but because my missing item was
before the change I didn't have the necessary proof to use it - that took
a few emails back and forth, but then they just sent me the replacement
no problem.
I've just ordered from them again, and I'll keep using them until they
run out of gadgets that I want ;-)
USD, I've ordered loads of stuff from 'em, usually the Nintendo DS cards for
my kids schoolfriends.
They've not let me down yet...

And they're not very good at sorting out problems. Beware!

Precisely my problem with DealExtreme: see below...

Do yourself a favour and stay clear of them.

Very poor quality, slow to respond to problems, 'new' ticket system
extremely unhelpful, refunds in $ although paid in £ (ie half value),
took several requests before refund made.
I wouldn't use them again. Ever.

Think of it like a Poundshop, very cheap but cheap quality too. I've been
happy with most of the things I've bought there, except an iPhone headphone
cable that was wired wrongly, I complained and they sent another (no return
required) but it was the same (nobody reviewing seemed to notice the left
channel was coming through both ears!), but for £1 I couldn't be bothered
complaining again.
BTW they didn't publish my negative review but I did manage to get the 5
stars down to 4. So take their reviews and rating with a large pinch of
salt, they may only be showing you the good ones.

I've ordered from them a few times without problems. Some of their
stuff is pretty much tat but it isn't too difficult to see which, the
pictures are generally very clear. Realistically, if anyone really
expects the "Glamorous Designer Crystal Dolphin Leap 925 Silver
Earrings " to be silver and diamonds when they only cost US$3,.50 they
are being a bit optimistic.
The customer reviews and scores are generally a reasonable guide.
The "free" shipping obviously isn't, it's just included in the price
so low cost but heavy or bulky items won't be a bargain or will be of
dire quality. Higher cost smaller items such as high intensity LEDs's
and small torches can give significant savings over UK prices.
They appear to have negotiated a really good bulk deal with the Hong
Kong post office and seem to be shipping on an "as available" basis
which means their consignments get used as fillers on part full
aircraft. Although cheap this does mean the goods often take a few
weeks to arrive.
On occasion their descriptions can be "challenging". It isn't
immediately obvious what a "Radiation Proof Display Cleaning Cloth"
is (it appears to be an anti-static cloth). Similarly "High
Brightness Tin Pen " refers to a small container of solder.
You should factor in that you may be charged customs duty and VAT plus
an Ł8 fixed handling charge on parcels over Ł18 in value although the
great majority of parcels seem to get through without any charge being
levied.
You also need to bear in mind that if anything goes wrong although
they will generally try to be helpful English isn't their first
language so you need to be careful to make sure queries are simple and
expressed clearly.
Some of the items they sell such as high power lasers are illegal to
import into the UK.
For the price of many of their items it is well worth the small risk
of something going wrong.
