Some years ago you could buy Root Beer in McDonalds, but they stopped them
doing them now. Your could also buy these in cans from certain cash and
carrys or supermarkets. Are these still available?

I have seen Sasparella (sp?) in bottles at Tesco. Expensive though (about
£1.90 for 300ml)

Sasparella is basically the same as root beer, only they used to serve it
mainly in bars during the Wild West era for anyone too pussy to drink
whiskey. This means supermarkets can put it in their mixers/speciality
drinks section and charge 4 times as much.

I hate the stuff but I remember driving from LA to Vegas once with my olds
and running out of water in the middle of Death Valley. The redneck bar in
the middle of nowhere we found only sold beer and Sasperella. Would have
been happier with beer - but at age 13 my parents made me drink that shite
to re-hydrate. Bastards.

@tiscali.com says...
"You might think that sarsaparilla would be made from extract of the
sarsaparilla plant, a tropical vine distantly related to the lily,
but you'd be wrong. It was originally made (artificial flavors have
taken over now, of course) from a blend of birch oil and sassafras,
the dried root bark of the sassafras tea. Sassafras was widely used
as a home remedy in the nineteenth century--taken in sufficient
doses, it induces sweating, which some people thought was a good
thing. Sarsaparilla apparently made its debut as a patent medicine,
an easy-to-take form of sassafras, much as Coca-Cola was first
marketed in 1885 as a remedy for hangovers and headaches."

Bit harsh that. (Quite true though !) How the hell the yanks have that
rather than Ginger beer is a mystery to me, frankly....

Being from Canadia, I miss root beer quite a bit. Though my wife agrees
with most posters here...she says it reminds her of germolene.

I don't mind ginger beer but it's got a deeper taste than ginger ale, which
is another popular fizzy drink in North America. You can get tiny cans of
ginger ale here, but only for mixing with booze. It's sold in pop machines
back "home".

Cream soda here tastes different. Coke tastes different. Pepsi tastes the
same.

ASDA do 3 x 1 litre bottles American Ginger Ale (diet or regular) for
90p (or Canada Dry for 82p/litre).
