Why are HDMI cables so expensive?

Maplins wanted northwards of 30 quid for a "gold plated premium cable" and
around 17 quid for a standard one. I fail to see the point of coughing up
extra for a gold plated cable when the signal is digital. What earthly
difference would gold plating make to the 1s and 0s?
I didn't even bother visiting PC World as I didn't want to suffer a heart
attack :)
I popped by Tesco and they were doing a "premium" cable for just over �20.
Still overpriced IMHO.
So I've returned home cable-less.
Any recommendations as to cheaper sources for HDMI cables?

Have used them on quite a few occasions and have been pleased with prices &
speed of delivery.
Haven't bought any HDMI cables though.

I have bought DVI, HDMI and other cables on eBay. It is worth doing a
search on there. I find I rarely need to spend much more than �2
including P&P.

I'm pretty sure that I've bought one from either Asda or Tesco for a
fiver sometime last year.

do a search on "ThatCable HDMI CABLE-What Hi Fi" - cheap as chips and
got 5 stars from What Hi Fi mag - if that can be taken to mean
anything at all :-)

It's to make money. If you were to go to Currys you would be lied to
by sales staff when it comes to cables. They do the same with HDMI
as they did with SCART leads. The best I heard was that thicker
HDMI leads give a better picture! They forgot it was data being carried.
I could have paid �30 each for HDMI leads but found them in Tesco
for �4. Perfectly good quality, just not a well known brand name.
You will always get companies making outrageous claims about their
products - they offer retailers a bigger mark-up so they push them more.
I remember Currys wanted �30x2 for HDMI leads and �20 for a
fibre optic link. I bought elsewhere and paid �12 in total.
It's similar to how HiFi manufacturers think of ways to target people
with more money than sense. They sell people "high quality" mains
leads for example, which are meant to improve the audio quality of
the amplifier! They do no such thing, but people with very little working
knowledge fall for marketing tricks. If you allow yourself to be conned
that's your own fault. Don't buy a DABradio thinking the audio will
be better than MW mono or FM stereo!

It doesn't improve quality at all. It is a digital signal which,
assuming it survives the transition across the cable without excessive
errors produces exactly the same digits at the other side. You can't
have "slight" improvements.
An expensive cable is no better than a cheap one although it may work
over a longer distance. They either work or they don't.

suppliers are cheapest even with postage from china (their air mail is
cheaper than royal mail!).
Play.com are cheap (a pound or two or three)...Yes the high st. is a rip
off.
incidently I have a mobile from china, a quad band iphone copy for £36 and
a 13" dual core atom processor with cam and mic. and HDMI video port
laptop for £230.
