Don't think it's a good idea having any surround speaker very close.

As an aside, in the eighties I used to visit friends that had horrible
ideas where to place stereo speakers. Either Diagonally across rooms,
Left in one room and the Right in another, or both stacked side by side
or stacked on each other.
Now I'm visiting people that have placed all their surround 5 or 6
speakers and subs neatly underneath the TV ...

Hahaha
I`m thinking maybe a DVD player with surround built-in, I`m going to
end up with an extra box under the telly anyway....
I think I need to pay a visit to my local Curries and/or A/V shop to
get some more advice on setting this up correctly....

You can have the rear speakers just behind your chair on each side, on most
systems you should be able to adjust the delay between front and rear so
that the sound from the rears doesn't hit you before the fronts (not so much
of an issue in small rooms). You should also be able to adjust all the
speaker volumes relative to each other to compensate for any that are nearer
or further away to your seating position.
There's a good THX Surround test DVD floating about the 'net which gives you
all the movie clips and test sounds you need to set up and show off your
surround system.

Well, that's another solution bit more "consumer" rather than movie
enthusiast. The midi system principle and all its shortcomings :-(
You have a nice pot of cash to do something grand, don't blow it on
something integrated that's all junk when the DVD mechanism packs up.
