It should play DivX if it says DivX on the front, most players that play
DivX will play XVid too which is normally what you would download. Try Asda
for a cheap one or check out the AVForums for more info.
Once you get fed up burning everything to CD then you can move on to a
networked media player box, Media Centre PC, Xbox, etc. ;-)

Way over my head LOL. What is a networked media player and what does it
do????
I want one for my father that plays most or all formats, dont know what I am
really looking for though.,

They are awsome! and you can multi region it yourself quite easily. These
sold a few months back for 45 quid - well worth it. The bigger brother with
5.1 speakers is also available but you may or may not need them.
HTH
I got one of these it came out the box multi-region. It also has a USB port so you can plug in a USB
drive or as I do a very large external hard drive with a USB connector.
Sam, you could consider the Sumvision Lynx or Phoenix. I have the Lynx.
The difference between the two is that the Phoenix has component output
sockets and the Lynx does not. Not a problem for me as I use the HDMI
output.
It is labelled both DIVX and MPEG4. With this player you do not need to
burn files to CD or DVD as it has both SD card and USB stick front
sockets.
Unfortunately I cannot advise on its DIVX performance as I have not been
using it that way. I got it as it had SD and USB input and HDMI output,
at a good price too.

The USB port makes it "must buy" saves hassle of burning disks and with pen
drives so cheap (8gb for you can watch about 10 movies from one pen
drive or a whole 24 episode tv series with so much ease. Its almost as good
as a media pc!
If you're not in too much of a rush get yourself signed up for the
LIDL and ALDI newsletters, they have them on specials at about £25-£35
at various times.

Do you wear glasses?

It's basically a PC with the ability to record TV, it sits by your TV like a
video.
You can set it to record 2 programs at a time and it'll even play video from
your main PC over a network.
I'd have one if I watched more TV :)

Love is like a snowmobile, speeding across the frozen tundra.
Which suddenly flips, pinning you underneath.
At night the ice-weasels come...
No more burning cds or dvds and no more !coasters". So far it's played
everything I've thrown at it. It will also stream from the pc depending
on the version.
I copy stuff across from the pc using the USB connection. It also acts
as an external drive.
Bob
I have a BT home hub. So in effect if I get one of these and have a film or
two on my PC they will play on my tv????
That would save me ages in putting them on discs. Where are these available
on the high street. I am running XP btw as you mentioned it depended on the
pc version.
Sam it really depends on how much stuff yuo watch from PC if its a lot then
i sugest you get a home theatre pc or like me have a dedicated old computer
to sit by the big tv and use it watch any media (i transfer the files wither
by wireless or usb - usb most of the time)
The divx player i linked to does other things like scale up for a HD TV
aswell and is just as good. You copy the files to pen drive (basically like
streaming but in one go) - takes about 1-2 minute on usb 2 to transfer a
700mb file and away you go. If you have a pocket hard drive its even
better.
Bob
Sam do you have a HD tv? if you want a media PC what sort of budget would
yuo have? Typically you will look at 500 quid for a small box type PC if you
don't mind a standard pc case you can get about 100 quid of ish.
however the freecom is priced very competivly:

Is not bad at all for the money! quite tempted myself!
Signal, you are right my mate ran one for years before upgrading to a HTPC.
Do you have any details on doing this?

I have an Xbox here, brand new in its box, waiting to have XBMC put on
it. Haven't gotten around to it yet.

My TV isnt a HD tv, is this a problem? I have an available scart
> How the heck did you get hold of a boxed Xbox??
They were getting rid of stock at Argos, must be about a year and a
half ago (or more) now, think they were selling them for £50-£60 with
four games. Managed to buy four of them and sold three on at a small
profit to pay for the extra one.
Have never gotten around to putting XBMC on it as I seem to have
enough options for playing stuff as it is and don't yet have a
wireless network or need to use it on another set or anything. Once I
do need it I will get it sorted.
I too use XBMC on an XBox 1 (not 360). Its excellent and will play
everything except full HD. I play mine over a network cable direct from my
PCs hard drive so you don't even have to copy your downloads to anything.
They are basically a very cheap PC that runs Linux and the XBMC program.
Some points to note though:
Some old ones can be a little bit noisy as there is a hard drive and fan in
them.
It can't play full HD with H.264 encoding (but it can upscale to HD well)
A little tech know-how is required to keep it up to date (FTP etc.).
Make sure you get a remote control with/for it.

That's the one!
If you decide to go the budget route, I can heartily recommend the
Technika 1033 from Tesco for 19.97.
