Try M&S pet insurance, weve had 2 claims in the last 3 years, the first one
was for £4000 within the first 2 weeks of us taking it out and they have
been fantastic, cant fault them at all.

It`s also worth thinking about self-insuring - can you afford to? We
decided to go down this route after being unable to find a quote below £250
for the year for our dog. I`ve just got a new job that pays much better
than my old job, so we can afford to cover the costs if the absolute worst
case happens and he needs very expensive surgery, followed by expensive
medication that would improve his quality of life. There does come a point
where the kindest thing to do is to have the dog put down, if the medical
intervention won`t result in a good quality of life, but it could well be
worth thinkingabout the self insurance route.

It's well worth making sure the policy you choose covers particular
illnesses for life. For example if your dog was to get something like
epilepsy, diabetes or a chronic skin condition for which he needed
treatment/medication for the rest of his life some policies would only cover
him for a year then after that you wouldn't be able to claim for that
particular condition again, although you could claim for subsequent new
conditons. Petplan is one which does cover them for life. I'm not sure
whether it's changed but when I looked into Tesco when I got my dog they
didn't cover the illness for life, just 12 months. I recently claimed for
quite a large bill with my petplan policy and they paid out with no
problems. The whole process took about 4 weeks from start to finish but that
was only because my vet took more than 2 weeks to fill in the claim form for
me! If he had been quicker payment from Petplan would have been very prompt.
Mel.

Ask your local vet who he recommends. I wish I had done this before taking out pet insurance, as the
one I opted for was so bad and tried worming out of payments etc. My vet said that this particular
company was known to him and he would not have recommended them. Cheapness is not always the best
way to go.

I would definately recommend M&S - we have been with them for 3 years now
since birth and we have nothing but praise - several £100 ish claims and a
£2500 one too - no quibbles.

We pay approx £15 pcm for a Pedigree Chocolate Lab - cant be grumbled at
price wise either

How old is your dog? Ours is just about to turn 3 and is a LOT more than
£15 pcm from M&S.

She was 3 years old in September - I think we got a good rate when they
first started M&S finance?

very weird. We went with M&S when we first got him as a puppy, and the
renewal quotes got higher and higher each time. But then we couldn`t find
any other company that would offer similar terms for less money, and we`ve
decided that we`d prefer to self insure, as we do with the boiler etc.

I know a lot of policies say they offer cover for the animals entire life,
but I`m quite certain that if this year your dog was found to need drugs
costing say £200 a month for the rest of it`s life, the insurance premium
you`d be charged at the next renewal would go up to reflect that.

Anyone been in this kind of situation and seen what the insurer actually
does?
