Bought a vacuum cleaner at Walmart, IIRC, it was a "Eureka" brand.
Months later, when I needed replacement bags, Walmart had none, nor
did they sell that model vacuum anymore. Local appliance parts store
had no bags either, they said it was a USA model vacuum, that only
Walmart (briefly) sold in Canada.
So, I had to buy a new vacuum! Well, yeah, I know - fool me once,
shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me - but I bought ANOTHER vacuum
from Walmart, this time a Bissel, but, thinking I'd beat the system I
bought a BAGLESS one.
Ha! wasn't long before I needed parts, filters, and a belt - this
thing EATS belts. Surprise! No parts at Walmart. Don't seem to sell
this model anymore, either.
If you're tempted to buy a vacuum at Walmart by their low price,
BEWARE. Not much of a bargain, when a few weeks or months later, you
need a bag or belt, or a filter, that costs a few dollars, and find
you can't get them, and you have to BUY ANOTHER VACUUM! Hey, it's much
less work, and more profitable, to stock and sell vacuums than vacuum
parts.
DON'T GET SCREWED BY WALMART!

On the other hand, a quick Google finds
http://www.eureka.com/index.htm
and
http://www.bissell.com/Default.asp?cookie_test=1
for those of us who choose to take responsibility and avoid being the
perpetual "*** screwed me" victim.

Believe it or not, there's a lesson in all this. If you're always looking for
the cheapest item on the market, you're going to find it. My wife's rule of
"pay the most you can afford for the best available item you're looking for and
you'll always get your money's worth" has served me well. I've got an old
cannister Electrolux vacuum that got to be going on 20 years old that still
sucks up the dust and stuff and I have no problems getting replacement bags.
Not only that, but there's an authorized Electrolux service center available if
I need it not 40 miles from my home.

You need to stop looking for bargains and start buying stuff that's worth what
you have to pay for it. BTW, if you really don't have a clue as to what's good
and what's not, you might try looking into Consumer Reports. I'll bet you could
get access to them in your local public library if you're too tight to buy a
subscription.

Your post could be made a lot simpler by just saying "you get what you pay
for".

I am surprised. We have a little privately owned business that sells and
services sewing machines and vacuum cleaners. He seems to have bags & parts
for everything - and there is no doubt in my mind, that if he didn't have it
in stock, he could get it toots suite.

So is Walmart the only store you have in your area? Did you know
that other stores actually sell vacuum cleaner parts (like
Sears)? I know that is a shocking thing, but it is true. And
I'll bet you can even use the Internet to buy parts -- how
radical is that!!!

In fact, I'll bet there was probably even a parts order form to
get stuff direct from the manufacturer, right in the box with
the vacuum!!

A problem with Walmart is that companies make models that are sold *only* at
Walmart and not at the other stores. Usually these models are the same as
regular models except for minor cost saving changes that allow them to be
sold cheaper at a price walmart requires. Such as the Walmart models gets an
11.5 amp motor, but the model sold at the other stores are 12.0 amp. Or the
walmart model comes without a few attachments, etc. Give the model number
of the one sold to a place like Sears and Best Buy and they'll have no idea
what you're talking about.

That said, the walmart model would not be significantly different such that
it uses different bags or belts than other models. It's just a matter
figuring out what 'regular' model the walmart model is derivative of. Not
rocket science.

They really wouldn't be different. Just need to know "J" series, "U"
series, whatever. I think the OP is being a bit of a drama queen.

Might be. Given the uniqueness of wal-mart models, it could be that Eureka
makes a unique bag for them as well, for whatever reason. There's very big
number of various bags they make, and the one I needed couldn't be found in
any of the many local stores I called. I called Eureka customer service, and
they sent me the bags themselves.

Maybe because you asked by model number and they did not know
that model because it was unique to WM? Once you got the
replacement bags did you check to see if they matched bags
available locally? As others have said, vacuum cleaner bags are
a pretty generic item within the brand itself.

No, their bags have their own codes, and I was asking by the code. No local
stores had that particular code that my vacuum wanted.

At http://www.totalvac.com/eureka_vacuum_bags.htm you can see 24 different
bags for Eureka. Most other brands at the same site have 2-4.
