My opinion on this subject (FWIW).....
Oswald wanted to deliberately wait until the Secret Service follow-up
car had made its turn onto Elm. That way, all of the SS agents had
their backs to the sniper, making it more difficult for them to
quickly return the gunfire.
In addition, I also think that LHO had another reason for waiting
until the President's limousine had made its turn from Houston to Elm
--- Oswald knew that JFK had no QUICK ESCAPE ROUTE on Elm. The car HAD
to continue west on Elm after making the turn. There were no side
streets that would permit driver Bill Greer to get the car out of
Oswald's line of fire. Kennedy would be exposed to the bullets for as
long as he was on Elm Street.
Also -- Other people have suggested the following reason as well ---
Lee Harvey Oswald didn't have the guts to shoot Kennedy square in the
face. Like a lot of snipers, he wanted to wait and shoot his prey IN
THE BACK.
I don't subscribe to that last theory myself. But it's food for
thought anyway.

The bottom line is Oswald was a gutless little back shooter. Firing
while the limo was on Houston would have exposed him to return fire
from the follow up car. Bushwacking JFK after he had turned the corner
and turned his back to Oswald was a safer play. Oswald didn't even
have the guts to look JFK in the eye before he shot him. Like Bob Ford
from the previous century, he chose to make a name for himself by
cowardly shooting an unarmed man in the back of the head. And like Bob
Ford, he got exactly what he deserved, an early grave.
