And Unsuccessful Attempts To Get:
1. Oswald Seen In The TSBD With A Rifle
Before The Assassination And
2. Oswald's Fingerprints On The Rifles
Before The Assassination
Reports mentioned the rifle as:
I. a 30.06 [7.62mm] British Enfield
II. then as a 7.65 Mauser
III. then as a Carcano.
How does a:
I. 30.06 (7.62mm) become a
II. 7.65mm and then become a
III. 6.5mm?
Let's examine this by looking at the rifles Oswald and Carter brought
into the TSBD in the 2 days preceding the assassination.
I. Mauser #1 - a ".30-06 sporterized Mauser"
[Argentine army 7.65mm Mauser cut down to 7.62mm]
Oswald left no fingerprints on it while alive. *
Carter brought Mauser #1 into Truly's office on 11-20-63 where it was
displayed for Truly, Oswald, and others to look at and handle.
Seems the idea was to get Oswald interested enough to handle it and
thus get his fingerprints on Mauser #1.
It appears Oswald neither handled it nor left any fingerprints on it.
Charles Nicoletti used Mauser #1 in the west end of the 6th floor of
the TSBD.
II. Mauser #2 - an Argentine army 7.65mm Mauser
Oswald left no fingerprints on it while alive. *
Richard Cain used it in the frame window.
III. The TSBD Carcano - a 6.5mm unserviceable rifle
Oswald left no fingerprints on it while alive. *
It was left in the general vacinity of Oswald during the
assassination.
<from John S. Craig's "The Guns Of Dealey Plaza."
"Oswald was told to bring a Mauser [Mauser #2 above] to the Texas
School Book Depository on November 21st and leave it at the site of
the shooting.
To complicate the plot, Oswald was to hand the dismantled
Mannlicher-Carcano rifle to a contact on the third floor and leave the
building."
This explains Oswald being seen by Wesley Frazier (who got the day
wrong in recounting the story) carrying a package (with Mauser #2 and
the Carcano in it) into the TSBD and ties in somewhat with the "Dean
of Knowledge."
The conspirators wanted Oswald handling these 3 rifles before the
assasination to get his fingerprints on them.
* However, Oswald was a Marine and knew how to clean a rifle. Also he
understood the implications of leaving fingerprints. Despite reports
of Oswald's poor shooting abilities, there are no reports of him
failing to properly clean a rifle in the Marines, and anyone who has
been through boot camp knows cleaning ones rifle is a routine task and
failures to properly clean a rifle could be documented and could also
give one a reputation.
Oswald's ability to properly clean a rifle is why:
- the TSBD Carcano was pushed up against the prints on his dead corpse
to get the fingerprint on the TSBD Carcano.
- a cardboard box from the frame sniper's nest was pushed against the
palm print on the dead corpse.
