I am sure somebody here would know what this box is. It is on the
right side of the Rachel Area 51 gate. It is attached with plastic
ties. I noticed it Sunday. It was not there a few weeks ago. It has
not wires or any source of power that I could see. Any guesses?

I suspect there are other brands as well.

I hope they install more of these. It will give me an excuse to buy
the receiver.

Rock Block Canyon has real (Qualtron) IR detectors. There is talk on
the Motorola document for X band people detectors that it is possible
to walk slowly and not trip IR sensors. Reality? Who knows.

Somewhere I have a sample of the pyro film used in those detectors.
You need a high impedance amp to sense it, but otherwise it is pretty
simple stuff. The people detection is done on a change in reading
basis. In the dark ages, it was done with analog filters. I bett today
is is done with a uP and ADC.

I designed a flame detector with the sample I was given. More like a
lighter detector in that you needed a sudden change. The really funny
thing is the piezo igniter was really easy to detect, much more than
the flame. Take the amp, disconnect the sensor, add some wire, and it
will sense the ignitor.

Having dealt with some gambling machine manufacturer, they use piezo
ignitors as part of their test suite. I hear a lot of gamblers chain
smoke. ;-) They also put spikes on the AC to simulate a vacuum cleaner
(motor) turning on and off.

Every once in a while you read about a gambling machine indicating a
payout should be given, but the house checks circuitry inside to see
if it a real payout, then denies it. Probably the false reading is due
to some glitch, or that is what they tell you.

I forgot to mention, this box is on 433.92MHz. You would probably hear
a chirp on the scanner, but you would have to park the scanner on that
frequency.

These cheap alarms are generally parts 15 devices, so there are not a
lot of places they can put their transmitters.

Some of the other Dakota boxes are on MURS frequencies.

I guess I am not doing very well in the posting department. I just went
back to the original link to see who the "they" were and noticed that
someone else had said what I did a day earlier, and that it had been
clearly posted below the picture . I only looked at the picture and
recognized the box as being like my neighbors, and went quickly looking
for a link without reading everything (sigh). Sorry for the
duplication.

I'm not sure what you are talking about since you were the one that
identified the device.

I have the manual and other documents if anyone is really interested.
Since it is proprietary, I can't upload the data to the net.

I think the back gate is really more for show than security. It is
such a drive to get to Area 51 from the back gate that nobody in their
right mind would bust through it. Talk about a choke point, you need
to drive through a canyon to get to the base.

If you hang out at the back gate, you can spot the Rachel residents
going to the base. I don't know if there are Rachel residents that
presently work at the base. The one I discovered is dead, though his
car lives on.

If you think about it, just how would you sell a used car in Rachel
except to someone in town. So Joe's Suzuki became Dave's. I have no
idea who drives it now after Dave's death.

Anyway, back to the back gate, I am pretty much convinced it is only
local and those from the TTR that use the back gate. I don't think
there is any sane way to get from the TTR to Area 51 except through
Cedar Pass, down the ET Highway, then through the back gate. Your only
other choice is the Mercury gate, which is a long ride.

And then to get gas for their cars, what to Rachelites
have to do these days? Drive to Alamo?

Some of the ranches have their own tanks. If they are selling to the

Most agricultural outfits at least have a diesel tank since you can
get a very low taxed diesel fuel, strictly for farm use (cough
cough).

I routinely bring a 2,5 gallon gas can with me, fill up in Ash
Springs, then use the contents as soon as I burn enough fuel to hold
it in the tank.

What surprised me was the lack of interest of the post. I still think
the cheapness at the back gate shows how little they care about it. I
remember before they got the tall tower back there, they would peep
through the blinds to see who is snooping.

You may recall from one of my Google Earth overlays that the back gate
road is hidden from view from Bald Mountain. That might explain the
tall tower.

I also noticed the comments on "excess funds." ;-)

The lack of interest would be mostly because I posted it. The
mysterious black box and the sticker in the window of the workers
truck in Alamo get almost no responses. I am basically ignored
because I don't fit their image of a good Area 51 Researcher. I could
have video from inside Area 51 and post it and would get little
response. I have committed one of the original sins, I am interested
in the ET mythology that surrounds the popularity of Area 51. I
usually turn here first now for stuff I find or questions I have!

You aren't a good researcher.
It's just that simple. Has nothing
to do with anyone's "image" of what
a good researcher should be.

Doesn't make you a bad guy. Just means that serious/mature
researchers won't give you much credence.

Yeah, the ET folklore is a drawback, but the two items he found are
pretty interesting. [Two more items than 90% of the bloviators on the
forum.] The more I think about it, that cheap ass sensor must have a
story behind it. Perhaps a guard was sleeping in the shack and failed
to wake up when the "intruder" beeped the horn. Or the back gate was
approached by a vehicle without a horn (ATV, heavy equipment).

In most organizations, you have to justify the purchase of gear. So if
there is a reason for this piece of crap security, it would be that
there are no Qualtron type road sensors in the area. Probably the road
is too close to Rachel and that they wouldn't want to risk another
sensor issue. Still, they could put a Qualtron type passive IR sensor
behind the fence to detect intruders.

There is a road leaving the back gate heading southward. If you take
it far enough, there is a gate. Beyond the gate there is one of those
drums (barrels) with a number of it for the contractor to read off as
they go out to man or service the "threats." It might be worth a drive
to see if they put an alarm on it. That would need a MURS or VHF
frequency to reach the shack.

I am not a bad guy for being interested in Bob Lazar, John Lear, or

The Home Depot driveway sensor or the saw blade sticker on a
government truck makes me wonder what the hell is that doing there!
For nobody on other sites to give it a second thought, makes me wonder
what the heck are they looking for or hoping to read about. Maybe a
post or two about sending a remote control plane or car into the
restricted area would perk some interest, or having another fund
raiser!

Likely the genesis of the cold shoulder you get at DLR.
That place may be a giant "blow Joerg or go away" but
one thing they're pretty consistant on is "not a UFO site".

Note that the more serious researchers tend to get
an equally cold shoulder from the "I wanna believe"
croud at ATS.

Ahem...the term "a good Area 51 Researcher" is an oxymoron.

We're all just various flavors of posers. Not that there's anything
wrong with that.....

Actually, if the money is divided evenly, I don't see anything wrong
with the fund raiser for the satellite photo. Now pocketing the extra
money is another story.

I wonder what front company was used to buy the cheap ass alarm?
Nellis?

The problem I see with the setup is some schmuck could approach from
that road behind Rachel, park in the gully area (where I had my damn
flat tire), then walk the fence line and swipe the alarm. Stupid of
course since it is a federal crime, but we've seen stupidity at the
border in broad daylight on youtube. Unlike the Qualtron alarms, there
is no mercury tamper switch in that cheap ass alarm. It would probably
go off if moved, but it's not 100% assured.

Having set up alarms similar to these, I'd say it would be very
difficult to grab one from behind and get away with it. As soon as
the field of view it is observing changes, it will send out the
alarm. There are really only two ways to avoid that. Over a period
of many minutes, one could VERY slowly cover the aperture with black
electrical tape. If the change is made slow enough, so as not to trip
the unit's change threshold, you could eventually cover it up and move
it all you want. The other possibility, depending where the battery
compartment is located, is carefully remove the batteries without
jiggling things. Either approach is pretty risky and would probably
well exceed the realm of a practical joke.

If you look at the sensor, it is shrouded a bit. I think if approached
from along the fence line (i.e perpendicular to the sensor), you might
be able to approach without triggering,. Of course, you could do the
experiment by tuning a scanner to the frequency I published elsewhere,
then walk the fence line. I do suggest avoiding the final step of
removing the box itself.

Those tie wraps that hold it to the fence will eventually break after
exposure to the sun. Even the UV resistance ties break after a few
years. That makes me think this is temporary.

If I can find that paper of an X band microwave people detector for
the NTS, I'll start a new thread.
