Hello,
I'd like to post the following announcement to the group subscribed to this list.
The artwork of Alex Grey is directly connected to the examination of consciousness, and
the mystical experience, so I hope it's appropriate.
Our site, (www.real.org) by the way, may be of interest. Everything there is a working
of right livelihood. Our members include The Institute of Noetic Sciences, Omega, and
Shambhala Publications. Many of the authors of this work have been called to do their
work through unusual experiences. Here is the post. Please do let me know if this is
appropriate to the newsgroup as we have other workshops we would like to announce here.
Thank You.
***************************
Alex Grey is giving a retreat workshop at the Omega Institute in Rhinebeck NY in June.
If you don't recognize the name, you'll recognize his work (several images at the URL
below.) The workshop is entitled: Visionary Art: Transfiguration & the Mystic Eye.
Alex Grey is at once one of the most eclectic, visionary and exactingly realistic
artists of our day. His work has been exhibited worldwide - The New York Times says
that:
Mr. Grey's paintings, as detailed and anatomically
accurate as medical illustrations, present man as an
archetypal being struggling toward cosmic unity...Grey's
visions of a flawed but perfectible mankind stands as an
antidote to the cynicism and spiritual malaise prevalent
in much contemporary art."
I spent some time talking with Alex about the workshop, and his work. He has a some
fascinating ideas about the consciousness/reality that we've posted on the site.
There's more about the workshop, several interviews and images of his work at:
http://www.real.org/members/listing/general/207d.206d
The web-images don't do his work justice, but you'll get the picture.
Omega is about 2 hours up the Hudson from NYC by Amtrak, and is lovely. These retreats
are small enough for personal exchange, and in a beautiful setting. Massages, good food.
This particular retreat is not for the spiritually faint-of-heart. Much of Grey's
artwork is inspired by mystical experiences. Nor does the workshop require 'previous
mystical experiences.' However, it is a wonderful way to give voice to the inspirations
that arise from the turning inward.
Omega has over 200 other workshops and journeys at: http://www.real.org/hp/Omega -
including a 2-day retreat with Julia Cameron (The Artists Way -
http://www.real.org/members/listing/general/207d.2170) A poetry workshop with
Pulitzer-prize winning poet Galway Kinnell, Songwriting with Rosanne Cash, and even a
basketball week-end with Chicago Bulls coach Charlie Rosen.
enjoy,
renee

A 5-day workshop at Omega's campus in Rhinebeck, NY.
<P><BLOCKQUOTE><i>Mr. Grey's paintings, as detailed and anatomically accurate as medical illustrations, present man as an archetypal being struggling toward cosmic unity...Grey's visions of a flawed but perfectible mankind stands as an antidote to the cynicism and spiritual malaise prevalent in much contemporary art."<p></i>
-- New York Times<p>
<i>"[Alex Grey's] work places him in a very small group of important contemporary artists; through his art he aspires to all three realms -- reaching from matter, to mind, to spirit -- in itself is a very rare ideal."</i>
<p>-- Ken Wilber<p></BLOCKQUOTE>
<P><img src="http://www.real.org/members/OmegaTemp/PSYCHBTN.GIF"align=left>Visionary artists Alex and Allyson Grey teach painting and drawing from the wellspring of inner visions. They write: In order to create authentic spiritual art, an artist must be guided by the mystic eye, the eye of contemplation, which discloses the transcendental realm. The artists primary medium is consciousness-the animating force that directs and infuses all other media. The images that are generated in our own mind will always be the greatest works of art we experience.<BR><BR>
Alex sees in human anatomy a microcosm of the many systems and levels of order in nature. His book, <i>Sacred Mirrors: The Visionary Art of Alex Grey</i>, traces the development of his work and of the mystical experiences that have shaped his and Allysons lives together. While Alexs art is representational, Allysons is abstract. Yet they both address the same spiritual reality.<BR><BR>
This workshop is an opportunity for artists at any level of experience to draw and paint from the sacred ground and the mystic eye. During the week we learn to empower the process of bringing inner visions to outer graphic form and explore the cross-cultural history of visionary art. We discuss the qualities of different mystical experiences, and the differences between sacred art of the past and contemporary spiritual art.<BR><BR>
<img src="http://www.real.org/members/OmegaTemp/kissing.jpg"align=right>Using guided imagery, meditation, and shamanic ascent, we enter the doors of the imagination to the theater of inner visions, focusing particularly on images of healing and transfiguration. Based on our experiences in class, or on past dreams and mystical experiences, we begin new works using a variety of techniques, from drawing with colored pencils and pastels to airbrushing. Those artists whose main tools are acrylics, oils, or watercolors may bring and work with their materials of choice.<BR><BR>
A list of supplies to bring will be sent upon registration.

Mystical geometry and a celebration of color is found in the
paintings of Allyson Grey. All of her works employ a measured
grid which either coalesce into crystalline images of order or
plunge the viewer into a chaotic universe of deconstruction.
The mosaic-like scheme of the mandalic paintings relate them
to Tantric art and Jain cosmological diagrams while the
overlapping disorder of the Chaos paintings relate to fractal
patterns and the science of chaos dynamics.
