A VERY RELIABLE source (Barbie Vanier) has revealed to me that: Stephen Paul
Vanier, has been in the Alta Bates Hospital in Berkeley, California,
suffering from Respiratory and Kidney Failure due to having contracted the
H1N1 Virus (Swine Flu).

He was admitted when he went into the ER on November 8, 2009, complaining
that he couldn't breathe.

He was isolated and put on a ventilator.

Tests confirmed that he had the H1N1 Virus.

He is in quarantine, hooked to all kinds of life support gear (tubes, hoses,
and etc.), and is heavily sedated.

The hospital is giving him a 50/50 chance (either living or dying) AND 50/50
odds of pulling through.

The nurse at the hospital who is taking care of Stephen said that his
biggest plus in this situation is that he is relatively young and strong.

Will keep you all updated as more information is available.

Berkeley, eh? Maybe he bussed himself out there so he could help Uncle Gary. . .

Heavily sedated. That makes it easier for staff to attend to him!

Hay James, Stephen is still in the hospital in ICU....12 days now
since he got there, he is holding his own but no better no worse. just
holding.....I want to ask the posters here if they recall SPV saying
anything about heading out to CA. The last post of his I found was
dated Oct 26. Does anyone remember his saying anything about heading
west...how he traveled.....or why????

Thanks, Barbee

Well, this bad news has gotten little response here. It wasn't cross posted
to all the other groups that Stephen used to haunt though. I'm taking that
as pretty much "Bambi's Mother's Rule": "If you can't say something nice,
don't say anything at all.". And it really doesn't matter what has all gone
down before, or how you feel about how Stephen has been all these years. The
chips are down NOW, and one of our fellows is struggling. I for one hope for
the best for him. After all, if the GooRoo isn't here, we won't have anyone
to kick around anymore.

> I want to ask the posters here if they recall SPV saying

Barbee, I don't recall him saying ANYTHING about actually heading out to
California, though he did occasionally mention California, but only in a
passing manner. He DID, at one time recently though, say that he wanted to
come live with ME. And one of the <a.c.4th-w> netizens later, when he hadn't
posted for a while facetiously accused ME of holding him captive in the
Kitty Kastle!

> The last post of his I found was dated Oct 26. Does anyone remember his

> about heading west...how he traveled.....or why???? Thanks, Barbee

I'm pretty conscientious about reading what he posts, after all, I AM his
BEST "wrost" student, and I don't recall him saying anything about going
anywhere, or revealing any reason to go anywhere, other than I do suspect
that he was ruing another Colorado Winter in light of what he went through
LAST Winter.

I looked up the Alta Bates Hospital, and there is listed a number that can
be called if one wants to converse with a patient. All one needs is either
the room number, or the patient's name.

I have a sneaking suspicion that Stephen was in worse shape than he let on
in his posts. His bout with the spider bite, and the mention of a stroke,
along with the diet that he was getting at the church's charity and homeless
shelter places that is barely fit to eat, coupled with his inveterate
alcohol and drug consumption, and advancing age, doesn't present a very
healthy scenario, even for the ONLY enlightened (with a capital "E") mystic
on the face of the Earth.

Anyway, make sure that you keep us/me in formed as to what is going on as
you find it out.

Hope this finds YOU doing well, and hanging in there.

Allison

The Oct. 26 post was sent from Boulder (University of Colorado). The
last time he mentioned California was in mid-Sept.

But people had been talking recently about him going to Ca to stay with
his brother after the divorce. Maybe he didn't mention it must have
taken hold.

~~~AllisonWonderland~~~:
Regardless of why he went, or how he got there, or when he decided to go,
one can but wonder if he caught the H1N1 in Boulder, or on the way, or once
he got there.
Let me say this on Stephen's behalf: No matter what one thinks of him
considering his stance on matters ontological, or his less than efficacious
life style choices, Stephen is, deep down, NOT a dummie. He may have an
addictive bent, he may be megalomanicial, narcissic, and irritating, and
there are probably OTHER factors that have led him to being a direlict, BUT
one thing he is NOT, and that is stupid.
There sometimes comes those occasions when all that is assumed gets set
aside, and the harsh, hard reality of a situation becomes clear. I'm leaning
toward that having happend to Stephen. With the oncoming Colorado Winter,
and considering what he went through LAST Winter, and in light of his
physical condition, and advancing age, coupled with the fact that he has, by
his own machinations, become not too firmly "attached" to much of anything,
it would not be unreasonable to imagine that just one day, he was forced by
his almost non-existant better judgement to stick out his thumb and
hitchhike toward California.
Once there, and starting to feel like shit, and finding it hard to breathe,
it it not too big a jump of extrapolation to see is anti-dumminess leading
him to a hospital Emergency Room.
And nature's reality works in strange and wonderful ways. If Stephen
survives, he's going to end up dried out, straight as a string, better
nourished, and somewhat humbled after his facing the Grim Reaper, and it
will be interesting as all hell to see if he takes the hint, and gives
living in a more perspicacious manner, or whether he'll just not be able to
wait to get his walking papers, make it to get to the nearest liquor store,
then to the closest crack dealer, and then get on the web to crow about how
he was just testing the pandemic.
I'm hoping, for Stephen's sake that his anti-dumminess will reign, and he'll
say to himself: "Whew, that was a close one!". Alas, years and years of less
than sane decisions seem to have been the hallmark of Stephen's life.
His Chances of living or dying are 50/50 (I mean, he either will or he
won't).
His ODDS of surviving are 50/50 (I mean, he either will or he won').
Whether he will take Mother Nature's HINT looks to be about 20/80 against
him. BUT I'm pulling for the 20.
I'm hopint that as he approaches 60 years old, that he will look back on his
previous course of antics and say: "Alright, I've been there, done that. NOW
it's time to get serious, straighten up, and start living right (whatever
that means for him)."
Anyway, hope you all are well, and that includes Stephen.
Allison.
My guess is that after three days of cold snowy weather, when his SSI
money got there on Oct. 30, he jumped on a plane to the coast.One-way
airfare from Denver to S.F is under $100.
I was also thinking that if he survives this near-death experience he
could come out a changed man. But there is still the chance that he
could chalk his survival up to his mystic powers and head back to the life.
Either way, I wish him the best.
MrM: I agree with Al, half frozen, he probably limped down the bus
station, bought a ticket with his monthly stipend, Destination
Berkely, . Once arrived he probably 'beat around the bush', while
deciding to actually approach his brother about staying. I doubt he
concerned hospital officials contacting a designated next of kin due
to his condition?
Whatever doesn't kill him makes him stronger! At this point, he is passing
"GO" but not collecting $200.00. He'll be turned out onto the street again.
Where he goes from there is anyone's guess. He has LOTS of alternatives.
Alas, they ALL seem to be the same. Or at least Stephen MAKES them all SEEM
the same. If his past track record is any indication, he'll once again make
the wrong choice. At least in THAT, he's consistent.
I dunno, Mr. M. that's kind of a bit of a stretch. I mean, the neighbors
would probably notice a drunk, stoned, limping, coughing, pale-as-a-ghost,
little, ugly, fat, bald-headed, queer, P-R-I-C-K hanging around almost
immediately, and then Gary would get a call from the Home Owners Association
asking him if that is his gardener. :)
being quite a bit more than what he received in Boulder and wondering
Hay all, to bring you up to date on SPV: he is still in the critical
care unit at Alta Bates. He has had some small improvements during the
past week and is holding at a level that is not getting worse, at
least of two days ago, but he is still on life support and
sedated......when the sedation is allowed to wear off a bit, he tries
to pull the respirator out. A tracheotomy may be forthcoming so as to
remove the respirator out of his mouth, and he may be able to
communicate somewhat after that....without all the tubes going through
his mouth they may be able to sedate him less. Thanks for all your
posts about his possible reasons for coming to California. I know he
is getting the best care possible and it would be so good if he was
able to communicate in the near future.
Barbee, thanks for the update. Stephen has been on my mind numerous times in
the recent past.
~~~AW~~~:
When Stephen is over all this, he will have already gone through all the
withdrawals from his alcohol and substance abuse. He'll be clean, and if he
has a lick of good sense, he'll take that as a blessing and make every
effort to stay that way.

B:

~~~AW~~~:
In the sedation twilight, I can imagine that the tubes in his throat are
VERY uncomfortable. A tracheotomy is somewhat drastic, but sometimes
necessary.
B:
> without all the tubes going through his mouth they may be able to sedate
him less.
~~~AW~~~:
All of which will make it to where he can participate in his own recovery.
That is, unless he chooses to be his "normal Pain In The Ass" (PITA) self.

B:

> Thanks for all your posts about his possible reasons for coming to
California. I know he
> is getting the best care possible and it would be so good if he was able

~~~AW~~~:
As you may already know, this kind of experience can be life changing. A
near death experience can sometimes works wondrers. Stephen's
more-than-necessary emphasis on his enlightenment with a capital "E" MAY
take on a somewhat less-than-important aura, and he MAY be able to put
things into a more efficacious justaposition to what is important in REAL
life.
Only time will tell.
But at least for the present, he is in good hands. He is probably having no
significant physical pain, though not totally without discomfort. There is
no telling what is going on in his psychological existence. He MAY be
touring the "spiritual" realms in ways that he never even imagined in his
rather superficial explorations of which he was so proud and somewhat vain.
Thanks for the update. Do keep us informed of his well-being.
Even though he has been a PITA at times, he still deserves, as a fellow
human, our best wishes for a speedy recovery.
When he finally gets back, I'm going to make a point of letting him know
that I'm VERY glad that he didn't kick the bucket because I wouldn't have
been there to talk over his last words, sing a little ditty, and dance a
little jig. Even though his pulling through WILL put a kink in the pleasure
I would have had of pissing on his grave! :)
Hope you are well.
