alt.windows7.general

No much traffic here yet, but some very nice and helpful people. I am sure
it will soon attract a lot of crap, but if you can sort through it some
people who know a lot and are willing to help.

David,
If your provider is Verizon, they dropped alt.. groups (and some other
groups) a while ago. Their rationale was there was porn on some of
these groups. Tsk tsk. I dropped Verizon internet when my contract
expired, so I don't know if they reinstated the groups.

There are some low cost (free?) newsgroup providers out there, so you
could subscribe to one of them and still keep your internet provider
if desired.

Perhaps someone here can reccommend a newsgroup service.

Try this one

http://www.eternal-september.org/

It used to be news.motzarella.org. When I first got this Vista machine MS
was having some kind of problem with the WM program that was blocking Usenet
feeds from my ISP. I registered with this and it worked fine till MS figured
out how to fix the problem. The site says it's still free so can't hurt to
give it a shot.

My ISP stopped newsgroups altogether, beginning with anything involving
pictures (supposedly to kill the porn, but killed everything else as well),
then one day - no such animal as newsgroups.

There is a list of 117 different free news servers at:
www.binaryfeeds.com

Some are oriented towards specific functions or companies (e.g., microsoft
and corel), some are text only, some are read-only (no post).

I found one that is mostly dependable, open to all content, and allows post,
but the newsgroup mentioned before (alt.windows7.general) hasn't showed up
yet (though they have groups all the way back to win95).
My news server is at:
(freenews.netfront.net)
However, since I switched in June, it has gone down twice for a day or two.

I'm sure some of the other guys can come up with a few more.

I looked at Google groups and the group does not show up there either, at
least not yet. I stumbled onto it a couple weeks ago. Hopefully it's just
new and will be put out. It will be great to have as I hate the forum types,
which is what MS wants to have for W-7.
