no color printing after refilling inkjet cartridge

I refilled both the color and black ink cartridges on my HP 842C
inkjet printer (the printer has been sitting around for about 6 months - I
got it from my in-laws). The printer prints in black just fine, but no
color printing seems to happen. Any ideas on what I should do? The ink I
used is from the "Filljet" ink refill system (www.filljet.com), following
their directions. The instructions state to refill immediately after
cartridges become empty. Maybe this has something to do with the lack of
color printing. To buy new inkjet cartridges, I could by a whole new
printer! Any ideas/comments?

Try placing the print head end in hot water for a minute or 2. You should
see the ink dissolve. When you see a somewhat steady stream of all 3 colors
put it back in the printer and run a cleaning cycle, then a teat page.

Actually that isnt a bad idea, for people like me who dont print that much,
and usually just print text.

When I bought my computer (used for good price, otherwise i would have built
my own) it came with a HP DeskJet 648c which has been seen at stores for
like 20-40 dollars retail/rebate. I find myself printing mostly text files,
and not often graphics. When my printer runs out of ink it actually would be
a moderatly good idea to just get a new one.

It also probley helps that my parents have a $500 dollar professional
printer down the hall, incase i do need to print graphics......

Although this would also be bad, if everyone did this there would be more
waste, or it would be like aluminum cans, bring all your printers in a
plastic bag and take it to the machine thingy in the Super Kmart parking
lot.......

Actually isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol works pretty good. Failing that,
give vodka a shot <g>, it's only 40% alcohol vs about 80% for the other
but most inks are more soluable in it than water, hot or not. At least
with the HP the jets are on the cartridge, so you have a chance.

Try taking the color cartridge out, and allow the bottom of the heads to soak in
a shallow bowl of very warm water. Change the water frequently to keep it warm,
and to get rid if the excess ink that will flow out. Blot it dry and pop it into
the printer, and immediately run a few cleaning cycles through it. This may
dissolve the clog. If this doesn't work after soaking for a few hours, then it's
time to replace the cartridge. And, you cannot get a printer equivalent to an
842C for the cost of a color cartridge, unless you can somehow get an equivalent
printer for around $25. You can get professionally remanufactured HP compatible
catridges for much less than the HP-retail new catridges. Try
http://www.gettoner.com/HPDeskJet.html . I have had good service from them in
the past.

It sounds like the color cartridge print head maybe clogged or
maybe
the computer may have the wrong driver. I would install a new
printer
driver then run a printer test, if that doesn't work, then buy a
new cartridge.
The new color cartridge costs $32.99 at the HP website.
On Ebay, I've seen them around $20.

Then you have to pay 4-7 bucks shipping.

Inless there is a pretty good deal on ebay (yr old comp, nice impala, in
this case really cheap cartridges, or cartridges in bulk cheap) it is
probley easier to just run down to your local Best Buy.

I got yellow and magenta to print out fine, but the blue ink is very streaky

Ink dries in the bottom of the cartridge (empty or full)
if it's not used for a while, and that blocks the print nozzels. I have
seen a "cartridge flush" (a solvent) that MIGHT desolve the dried ink in the
sponge at the bottom of the cartridge if it's soaked long enough. Emerse the
bottom of the cartridge in it for hours, or a day or two(depending on how
long it's been unused).
