'About 10-12 per cent of our population is going to be affected by heart
problems in their lifetime. We have a disaster at our hands and problem is
that there is not going to be enough money in the world to treat so many
people,' Dr Naresh Trehan told reporters here.
He said that practioners must use their knowledge in every direction to
spread awareness among the masses so that people can take corrective steps
in time.
He said that people eating junk food and people with a family history of
heart diseases or having hypertension, blood pressure problem, high
cholestrol and diabetes coupled with lifestyle full of stress were more
prone to heart diseases.
Trehan said people should not ignore the early warning signals which can
vary from repeated pain in the chest area, which is sometimes mistaken as
burning sensation or gas as it can be the advent of a heart ailment.
'Men above the age of 30 and women over 35 years should get themselves
checked up. People with a family history have four to five times higher
chance of getting a coronory heart disease and should get themselves checked
up,' he said.
Trehan said that people should lead a moderate lifestyle and make it a must
to include exercise in their daily routine and try to stick to a healthy
diet.
