Thanks for taking the time to reply in such detail, Ken. I'll keep
the group advised. My first attempt, deleting all references to the
stock, then recreating it with just a minor name change failed.
Perhaps, I should have defragged and rebooted, before doing the
rename.

How does Quicken (2011) calculate portfolio return?

In the Portfolio view, I have YTD, 1 yr, 3 yr, 5 yr return columns.
The YTD percent (at least) for (at least) one security makes no sense.
It's displaying a little over 6% and this stock (APD) has definitely
not appreciated at all since the start of the year, let alone 6%.
There is plenty of historical data for this stock since I've had it

Thanks for chiming in, Ken. My experience with Placeholders is that I
only get them when Quicken and the update from my brokerage gets out
of sync. It isn't fractional shares, it's entire buy transactions, as
best as I can see. Quicken recognizes the new security but either
doesn't see or isn't sent the approprite Buy transaction, so I have to

Jo, I often end up with placeholders after updating with Vanguard. As
near as I can tell, this happens when fractional shares are bought;
then, Quicken gets how many shares are actually owned, and the
fractional shares and the "actually owned" don't match up.

Dave,

First: Backup your Quicken file immediately. And not onto any old
backups you had before.

Second: If you have an old backup that predates the problem, keep a
careful eye on it. You may want to use it.

Starting about 3 months ago, I have been unable to update the
prices/quotes on 3 of my stocks. The other several dozen update
fine.

Nothing else has changed. Neither downloaded quotes NOR manual

I used to get this once in a while years ago with Quicken 2000 through
2002 - never did understand what triggered it. Memory is sketchy about

There may be multiple problems that give similar duplicates.

The discussion I've had with the Visa "expert" at my brokerage
indicates it's ONLY Visa transactions and the dupes appear at the first
