I frequently use Q’s “Find” to see prior checks to a payee (usually
charities which keep bugging me to send more money). However, when
“Find” opens, the default category is always “Date” (which I have
never used). Is there any way to change the default category to
“Payee”?

Yes, there is a way. The default search field is the one the cursor is in
when you hit Ctrl-F. Just place the cursor in the field you want to
search, hit Ctrl-F and start typing search criteria.

IMHO, alt-i is a better search. And it remembers the field selected
last time it was used.

I would like to suggest that you go to the category list, find the
payee and ask for a report. Then you can see how many times you sent
a check to that charity for all they years in your current account.
That is what I do.

How do you find the "payee" in the "category" list?

If you want a list of transactions for a category in a transaction in a
register, you can right click the category field of the transaction and
select "Amount spent on xxxxx" (or click the tiny "report" icon to the
right of the category field.

You can right click on the payee name in the transaction in the register
and select "Payments made to yyyyy" (or click the tiny "report" icon to
the right of the payee field).

These reports will be for all accounts, but easy enough to select on, or
subtotal by, account, if needed.

Or, for payees with transactions only in the one account; you can sort the
register by payee.

Sorry - Me Bad - did not mean category list. Meant the Transaction
List. I see it is now called the "Memorized Payee List" in this 2010
version. I have icons for each on my tool bar and don't even think
about the name of what I am clicking on when I want to check how many
times I have paid the Salvation Army lately or whatever. Choose the
name of Payee and click on report - top right.
