In the register and i reports, Q now treats categories that are checked
as "Tax-related" as hidden categories. In the register, I can type the
full category, including sub-categories and it will accept it. If I
select to show hidden categories, ti will auto fill.
Reports now ignore hidden categories, so I have to edit the report,
select to show hidden ones and then generate the report.
I'm hoping that I won't have to go into each category and un-check the
tax box. I don't need them, but it would be a royal pain th have to do
it one by one.
Anyone seen this and have a fix or work around?
TIA,

I looked at the Help file to see what it says about the _categories, but
didn't find anything. I think there used to be an explanation of the
_categories.

I found a couple of obscure references, but all they said was that you can't
delete underscore categories.
As far as I know the underscore categories are all related to investment
acounts (stocks, bonds and mutual funds).

Somehow all the categories involved here got marked "hidden". I haven't
a clue how this happened. I still have my Windows 7 Release Candidate
partition functioning. I guess I'll have to boot it up and see if Q09
has them hidden there. If not, then I definitely think either Q10
upgrade or validation (no errors were listed) changed it....
I haven't noticed any change in the _Categories in Win7 and/or Q2010.
They've behaved the same for at least a decade, so far as I can see.
When I record (or download) interest on my checking account, it goes into my
Interest Income:BofA Category:Class, which is one of several Classes I've
created under the standard Interest Income category. My Income/Expense by
Category report shows each of these several Classes on a separate line;
these match the 1099's I receive from the banks each year-end. In the
report, I can click Customize | Categories and select which categories to
hide or show; the underscored categories are not in the list unless I check
"Show (hidden categories)".
But when the same bank pays me interest on my CD, it goes automatically into
_IntInc, one of the several categories with leading underscores in their
names, which Quicken provides - and automatically uses - for income from
Investment Accounts. I don't see any way to create Classes for these
_Income Categories, so I have to "comb out" the individual amounts and add
them up to compare to 1099's after the end of each year.
In the Categories List, under Investments, I can click the button to Edit
each underscored category. But that Edit window offers very few options.
One option is to check the Tax-related box and to choose which "Form" it
should be transferred to when TurboTax imports the information from Quicken,
but this has no utility within Quicken itself, so far as I can see. I can
choose between US Government interest or interest taxed only by the state,
for example, but I can't segregate between taxable interest from BofA CDs
and Wells Fargo CDs.
There are several "Options" available in the Categories list, but none of
them are very meaningful or helpful. It's as if Quicken's designers have
never actually had any investments of their own and have no idea what is
important to users who do own CDs and other investments. :>(
But this hasn't since the 20th Century, at least.

Thanks! That works in Q2010, too. ;<)
In all my years of using Quicken, I never located that Investing Report.
Looks like it will do exactly what I've been looking for.
Only one problem, and that not fatal: Each Security is in a column, not a
row, and each column is much too wide and apparently not adjustable. At
first I thought it showed only my 2 broker accounts, then I noticed the
horizontal scroll bar and found the columns for each of several CDs. To
print it out, I'll need to use paper that's about 36" wide. :>(
But I can live with that, so Thanks again.
