Dear Usenet Users,

My name is Petros Apostolopoulos and I come from Greece.
I am writing on behalf of a friend who is a teacher of English,
but unfortunately she does not have Internet access at all.
We are interested at any kind of freeware software that could be
helpful to an English teacher and can be downloaded ftom the Internet.

We are mainly looking for *test making software*, that is software
which helps the teacher design and print tests including all common
kinds of questions such as true/false, blank filling, multiple choice
and so on.
It would be very helpful if you could suggest freeware programmes
which belong to this category, as well as sites from which one can get
them.

*** EARNEST REQUEST *** :

We would be very grateful to you if you could forward your answers to
our E-mail address, which is papo...@hotmail.com. This is requested
because we do not have access to Usenet from home. We can only see the
web, through a mobile phone. Apart from that, the news server of our
school does not seem to operate properly most of the time.

Yours sincerely,
Petros Apostolopoulos ( Thessaloniki - Greece
Email : papo...@hotmail.com )

Hello Petros,

I am not familiar with any free testmaking software, but I would like to
suggest that you look at www.familygames.com, for a wonderful
spelling/vocabulary game called Spell-Mell.
It is a shareware game which you can adapt to teach words in any language
(free to try, but requires a registration fee to use it to its full
extent).

Since you cannot access the Web easily, I will quote from the description
at the familygames site:

" Spell-Mell is a fast-paced, exciting, addictive game that's fun for all
ages, featuring trivia quizzes and word puzzles to suit every ability
level. ***It's also a valuable educational activity that teachers can use
to encourage the memorization of spellings, vocabulary and facts in a
format that will keep students enthralled from start to finish.***

You can use Spell-Mell for studying at home by creating your own quizzes
to go along with the ones we supply. Or just have fun playing with your
family - work together to find the answers, or compete to see who gets
the highest score.

***Studying foreign vocabulary is a snap with Spell-Mell - you won't
believe how fast you learn! The supplied vocabulary module starts you off
with hundreds of words in nearly 20 different languages!***..."

The site goes on to say:

"The current release of Spell-Mell includes no fewer than 17 game modules
for you to enjoy!

Six modules are fully playable even in the evaluation version of
the game - including the illustrated 300-word foreign vocabulary quiz
(Vocab Pack Number 1), an illustrated Alphabet Quiz for younger children,
an Animals Trivia Quiz, and an assortment of brain-teasing word games.

The evaluation version also lets you try out the first level of
the remaining game modules, including four word and trivia games created
especially for Spell-Mell by Internet puzzle-master Michael Curl.

***You can also create your own Spell-Mell game modules using
SLED, the Spell-Mell List Editor,*** or obtain new modules from our
web-site or from other users as they become available. You can play the
first level of modules from these sources even before you register.

Try the sample version. If you like it, your registration code
unlocks the complete game: nothing else to download!

The sample version of the game lets you check out this exciting
and educational word game absolutely free. If you like it as much as we
think you will, it only takes a few minutes to obtain your registration
code and unlock the complete game: you don't need to download anything
else! "

The main page which explains Spell-Mell is here:
<http://www.familygames.com/share/spel.html>
http://www.familygames.com/share/spel.html.

The location for downloading the game is:
ftp://ftp.islandnet.com/AHA/sm_inst.exe (windows 3.1 version).
or ftp://ftp.islandnet.com/AHA/spm_inst32.exe (windows 95/98 version).

"How much does it cost? How do I pay?
The Evaluation Version is free, and if that's all you want you never have
to pay.

Upgrading to the Registered Version is easy and inexpensive: just $16 US
or $22 Canadian.* When you register we'll send you a special code that
"unlocks" the game for unlimited access to all areas.

* Canadian currency is used for credit card orders; US currency for
international money orders and checks. The amounts are approximately
equal."

I wish I could send you pictures, as well as words! Can you recieve
pictures on your mobile phone?

I hope this helps. E-mail me directly if you need further help regarding
Spell-Mell.

Test Generator Lab is a great software tool for students and teachers. It is an offline test generator to help you create your tests. It helps students to keep track of their exam preparation. Teachers can create practice tests and deliver to students for practicing. The great think about this tools is that if is absolutely free for exam takers, only test creator alone needs to purchase license. I personally think that Test Generator Lab is one of the indispensable tools educators should be using.
