Can a Sony video camcorder be used as a webcam?
It connects to my PC vis USB 2 for viewing and editing
movies.

Don't know about that particular model, but I was able to use
a Hitachi camera as a webcam - until I got a proper webcam.

The problem with using a camcorder is that there is no easy way
of fixing it in a useful and safe position!

Yep. I also used to use my Canon as a webcam. Guess it depends on what
you want to do with..streaming vid or just an 'interval' upload of a
still image. If it is the latter then there are easier/cheaper methods
that 'wasting' a video camera on it, but still having the very good
quality that the video camera would provide.

The usb connection is usually only used for transferring stored
pictures and video. The i.Link connection is used for transferring
live or stored video. So if you connect the camera's i.Link port to
your computer's firewire port with a firewire cable, then you can use
your camcorder as a live webcam. The software you need is DVdriver

If your camcorder also has a remote jack, sometimes called LANC, then
you can also control the zoom from your computer or over the internet
using a LANC MotorPod
