Recording webcam?

I have a USB webcam on my server, currently it records the feed to hard
disk, but it is inconvenient as I have to have the webcam window open and
use Camtasia screen capture software - which is fine, as long as I am not
doing anything else on the screen as Camtasia will capture these workings
instead.

Is there any program, free or pay, that will allow me to record direct from
the feed of my USB webcam that will not require the capture window to be
open on the recording PC?

They are too large as I am recording many hours at a time. Using my current
method I can get several hours per gigabyte. I would be willing to
compromise on size though for the right program, but not too much.
